I think Satoshi Tajiri wanted the original name of Red were Ash, but when he discovered that Ash will lost the Kanto League in the anime he wanted to find quickly a new name for the main character of Gen I, so he thinked Red will be a great and original name for his character.

I think Satoshi did this because he didn´t want the main character of Gen I was a loser like Ash.
