Honestly, I hate overblown historic comparisons as they cheapen issues in the past, but it keeps jumping into my mind. There were IRA members in parts of the movement, but not directing it. What NICRA wanted was equal rights for Catholics, but instead of engaging them, the government ignored the obvious corruption and discrimination by saying, "Nuh uh, 'cause you're all just the IRA in disguise, so we won't listen to your legitimate concerns. I don't care if you and your leaders don't support and have condemned the IRA, some of the marchers were in it so your movement is tainted".
That strategy worked great. Instead of just acknowledging the terrible faults in their state and striving to fix them, they made baseless accusations against the group and then had a police crackdown on peaceful protests. That strategy worked great, except for the part where it caused the Troubles.
Cool, I've been looking for a reason to lay into Chipman recently. The fact of the matter is that he's such an utterly spineless, self loathing worm that nobody ought to take anything he says seriously. He worships at the false idol of scientism because he's afraid to face the reality that by any authentic code of beliefs he comes up desperately lacking. He likewise supplicates himself as a fourth wave feminist bootlicker because he lacks the gumption to make himself actually appealing to women. Incapable of inspiration and joy, he looks only to turn his angst and self-hate onto others in hopes that he might makes alliances out of hatred with the like minded. Truly, he is one of the most inadequate, pitiable, and generally worthless commentators on the internet. Doug Walker he is not, ladies and gentlemen.
