Overview

MrBased Attacking YouTuber Alex Novell Allegations refers to accusations against American YouTuber and Kick streamer MrBased‬ (real name Jason Itzler) brought forth by YouTuber Alex Novell in which he stated in a video that he was attacked by MrBased after investigating him for allegedly murdering a 21-year old woman named Julia Sumnicht in March 2010. The allegations became a viral topic on X / Twitter, Reddit and YouTube in mid-August 2024 as the incident garnered widespread attention online.

Background

On August 19th, 2024, YouTuber^[1] Alex Novell uploaded a video titled "Mr Based Jason Itzler Attacked Me," showing an altercation with Kick streamer MrBased‬, real name Jason Itzler, in the streets of New York City. The video (seen below) amassed roughly 11,200 views, 220 likes and 270 comments in 18 hours.

MrBased Murder Allegations

In March 2010, Julia Sumnicht, a 21-year-old Wisconsin college student, suffered a fatal overdose of a date-rape drug hours after she left the apartment of notorious “King of All Pimps” Jason Itzler (MrBased) and his roommate in Miami, Florida.^[3] The case was never concluded and Itzler's relations with the case were never fully proved.^[7]

On June 22nd, 2024, the YouTube^[4] channel Ignore Me posted a video from the November 7th, 2011, episode of The Early Show on CBS explaining Julia's case (seen below, left), which amassed roughly 400 views and seven likes in three months. On July 13th, YouTuber^[8] killkadn uploaded a video discussing MrBased and the allegations, receiving over 11,000 views 400 likes in a month (seen below, right).

Developments

The incident gained virality after the X^[2] / Twitter account @DramaAlert posted an image of Novell's face covered in blood mentioning the incident with MrBased (seen below), amassing over 3.1 million views, 22,000 likes, 600 replies and 780 reposts in 23 hours.

Online Reactions

Reactions to the allegations that MrBased attacked Alex Novell quickly became a viral topic on X, especially for his name being similar to YouTuber MrBeast, as X^[5] user @BipolarGhosty uploaded on August 19th, 2024, a photoshopped image of MrBeast as the Ben Affleck Smoking meme, captioning it, "I think I need a nap cuz I thought I read that as mr beast." The post (seen below, left) amassed more than 4,800 likes and 13 retweets in a day.

On the same day, X^[6] user @BillPrinter00 also confused the streamer's name, posting "I read that as Mr. Beast. Thought he was starting to get revenge😭." The tweet (seen below, right) received more than 1,600 likes and eight reposts in a day.

The incident in NYC between the two content creators was also widely discussed on Reddit in late August 2024. For example, multiple threads on the /r/WorldOfTShirts^[9][10] subreddit received hundreds of views in less than 24 hours.
