Headlock Selfie refers to a fan art trend inspired by a photo of a girl getting put in a headlock by someone with a large, muscular arm in front of a mirror. The photo grew popular in April 2024 on Twitter / X as a redraw reference.

Origin

On April 12th, 2024, Twitter / X^[1] user @biforvi uploaded a picture of a girl taking a selfie in front of a mirror while she is being put in a headlock by someone behind her. The post received 920 reposts and more than 10,200 likes in two weeks (shown below).

Spread

One week later, the photo grew popular as a redraw reference, as Twitter users began using it as inspiration for fan art. For example, on April 18th, 2024, Twitter / X^[2] user @k2rasu uploaded fan art of Acheron and Black Swan from Honkai Star Rail in the pose. The post received more than 1,700 reposts and 9,600 likes in one week (shown below, left). On the 19th, Twitter / X^[3] user @AnnyDee__ uploaded fan art of Alhaitam from Genshin Impact. The post received more than 3,800 reposts and 21,600 likes in one week (shown below, right).

On April 20th, 2024, Twitter / X^[4] user @lynblord uploaded fan art of Aventurine from Honkai Star Rail_. The post received more than 1,500 reposts and 11,000 likes in one week (shown below, left). On the 21st, Twitter / X^[5] user @kghnine_ten uploaded fan art of "_Haikyuu!!":https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/subcultures/haikyuu characters using the photo as a reference. The post received more than 2,200 reposts and 10,400 likes in one week (shown below, right).
