I’ll Take a Potato Chip and EAT IT is a YouTube Poop fad based on a memorable scene from a popular TV anime series Death Note.

Origin

This scene comes from the last part of the 8th episode in the animation sereis.^[1] In this scene, the villain protagonist Light Yagami (Kira) grabs a potato chip out of the bag and takes a dramatic pause to utter “I’ll take a potato chip… AND EAT IT!” before taking a bite at it. Played out in slow motion, the friggin’ potato chip shatters into sparkling dust.

The Youtube Poop fad began just prior to the making its US debut on October 20, 2007. On July 4th, 2007, Youtube user YasashiiYuki^[2] uploaded “Epic Potato Chip Eating Death Note Live Action”, using a scene taken not from the Anime, but from the recently released Japanese Live Action Death Note film. The clip has been viewed over 80,000 times. On December 8th, 2007, Hikaripop^[3] uploaded a video titled “Anime Poop – LIGHT TAKES A POTATO CHIP.”.

The most influential instance of Death Note YTP surfaced on December 27th, 2007, a five second soundbite of “I’ll Take a Potato Chip …and EAT IT” excerpted from the original scene:

While it is not an example of YouTube Poop per se, the exploitable clip served as a jumping board for many YTP derivatives that followed on YouTube. As of January 2010, it has been viewed over a million times and ranked the #6 Top Favorited and #20 Top Rated video in the Education category.

On August 26th, 2007, Youtube user HurricaneFaFniR^[4] uploaded “Death Hotel Note,” a Legend of Zelda CD-i using the English Dubbed audio from the Death Note live action film’s trailer. Days later, on August 29th, another Death Note Youtube Poop was made.

I’ll Take A Potato Chip….And OM NOM NOM NOM

On February 27th, 2008, infamous YTP artist Walrusguy^[5] uploaded “YTP DEFINITELY A GOOD SEASON FOR POTATO CHIPS,” further spreading the meme to his considerably large audiences. The original upload has been taken down, but a copy has been made available via WalrusguyMemorial.
