About
God of the New World Game (Japanese: 新世界の神ごっこ, Shinsekai No Kami Gokko) is an illustration fad on the Japanese social network service pixiv, which is based on a popular anime/manga series Death Note.
Origin
The main subject for this fad is the maniacal laughter of the villain protagonist Light Yagami (Kira) appearing in the 19th chapter of the manga series. This chapter is also famous for the exploitable fad L's intro.
Spread
This laughter was introduced to the resource for a user generated campaign for parody illustrations by a pixiv user Tanki Morisoba in September 27th, 2009.[1] He made the template file of his face and asked for image responses to this image. Then, this campaign was named "The God of the New World Game".[2]
His proposal received favourable responses from other users, because the facial expression has high versatility giving surrealistic lulz to everything. As of January 2012, the amount of illustrations using this template file on pixiv numbered more than 400.[3]
