Light Gay As Hell, also known as Light Gay As Shit I Would Have Gone Crazy, refers to a series of posts about Death Note protagonist Light Yagami being homosexual because of his lack of lust for Misa Amane. The catchphrase was often paired with a frame from the manga of Misa in lingerie greeting Light at the door, saying, "Light!" with Light responding, "Misa." The image and caption combo was routinely posted on Twitter / X in the early 2020s. By late 2024, internet users likened the repeated use by various accounts to Engagement Bait and began mocking the copycat tweet via exploitable usage. While the frame was remixed, so was the caption which became a snowclone as well.

Origin

On November 7th, 2006, the English translation of Death Note's chapter 68 titled "Discovery" was released in stores. On page 152 (shown below), Misa Amane exclaims, "Light!" as Light walks into a bedroom. Her back is to the viewer and she's wearing lingerie. Light monotonously responds, "Misa," and quickly gets distracted by what's on his computer.^[1][2][3]

On March 3rd, 2021, X^[5] user @RUK1AF4N tweeted, "Light gay as hell," receiving no likes. A few weeks later, on March 19th, X^[4] user @deatharchive tweeted a colored version of the abovementioned frame, gaining over 24,000 likes in three years. Multiple X^[6][7] users quote tweeted the post, writing, "Light gay as hell…" however, none went viral.

The phrase's first-known, viral usage was shared by X^[8] user @kusuosroblox on May 15th, 2021. The quote tweet was of a different frame posted by X^[9] user @deatharchive on the same day, showing Misa waiting for Light in a nightgown on a bed, asking, "Light, are you done for the day?" @kusuosroblox captioned it, "Light gay as shit I would have gone crazy," gaining over 62,000 likes in three years (shown below).

In the following months, @kusuosroblox's quote tweet was reposted on social media sites like Tumblr.^[9] On May 16th, 2021, X^[10] user @summer_Dogg shared multiple screenshots of a thread under @kusuosroblox's quote tweet in which users were talking about L "worshipping" Light's feet, gaining over 40,000 likes in three years.

On May 5th, 2022, X^[11][12] user @voboed quote tweeted a post that read, "Cool p---- I guess? I don't care really," with the frame of Light greeting Misa, captioned, "Literally this." The quote tweet gained roughly 88,000 likes in two years (shown below).

On November 28th, 2024, X^[13] user @dailydeathn0te tweeted the abovementioned Detah Note frame, gaining over 7,500 likes in six days.

Later on November 28th, X^[14] user @s4ndas quote tweeted the aforementioned post, writing, "Get ready for 1000 quotes going viral for saying 'Light gay as hell I would've gone crazy,'" receiving over 186,000 likes in six days (shown below).

In the following days, people started parodying the Light Gay As Hell post. For instance, on December 2nd, 2024, X^[15] user @lawlightfreak tweeted a version of the panel with L in lingerie greeting Light and Light being ecstatic after seeing him. The tweet gained over 205,000 likes in two days (shown below).
