About
Mission Status: SICK refers to a webcomic by Tumblr user dat-soilder made in June of 2014 in response to another Tumblr user's post in which a man shoots a wasp nest with a sniper rifle from the moon, resulting in members of mission control celebrating as a screen reads "Mission Status: SICK." The comic became the subject of redraws over the following years, while the final panel became the subject of parodies and saw use as a reaction image, often post to news stories and videos that seem incredible.
Origin
On March 15th, 2014, Tumblr[1] user officialunitedstates made a post reading, "I want to be the first person on the moon to shoot a sniper rifle at earth and hit a wasp nest. my whole life so far is leading up to that moment." The following day, Tumblr[2] user dat-soldier, as a response, drew an astronaut getting out of a lander on the moon with a sniper rifle and shooting a wasp nest on earth. The final panel shows mission control with a screen in the background reading "Mission Status: SICK". Within ten years the post gained over 925K notes (shown below).
Spread
The final panel of the comic became the subject of memes over the following years, while also seeing use as a reaction image attached to incredible or "sick" stories.
For example, on November 14th, 2021, X[3] user @Drawloverlala posted a redraw of the panel referencing Mega Man, garnering over 8,100 likes in three years (shown below, left). On April 21st, 2023, Tumblr[4] user slitherpunk posted a version of the meme in response to a SpaceX rocket exploding, garnering over 25,000 notes in a year (shown below, right).
