About

No Capes! is a line said by Edna Mode in the 2004 Pixar animated movie The Incredibles. The line and its associated screenshot have been used as memes centering around character designs online.

Origin

In a scene of The Incredibles, Edna Mode discusses with Bob Parr the details of his new superhero costume; when he suggests adding a cape to it, she immediately refuses, bringing up many instances of superheroes who died in an accident because their cape got in the way, before yelling a definitive: "No capes!" The earliest online presence of this scene is a YouTube upload from April 3rd, 2007, although transcripts existed as early as 2004[1].

The earliest online picture featuring the "No capes!" line is a screenshot of DeviantArt user UndeadPrincess' computer wallpaper, which was uploaded on December 29th, 2004[2].

"Before I even saw the Incredibles I loved the way Edna Mode looked and after I saw the movie I knew I had to make a wallpaper with the two pics I found from Yahoo. So there ya go."

Spread

This popular scene contributed to the popularity of Edna Mode. Many online have debated and theorized over Edna's aversion to capes. One famous fan theory (see below), first formulated by Know Your Meme user Victor on June 6th, 2014,[3] hypothesized that Edna Mode designed Syndrome's supervillain costume, and added a cape to it on purpose.

Original theory

The line was also an inspiration for many memes in which Edna criticizes the costume designs of various characters, especially other superheroes across cultural franchises. The earliest indirect reference to Edna's speech comes from an Incredibles fan art from DeviantArt user queenbean3 posted on April 5th, 2005.[4]

HEY!HANDS OFF THE THREADS LADY! YECCH!! THIS CAPE IS NOT ONLY A HAZARD, IT IS AN EYESORE! I WOULDN'T USE THIS SORT OF FABRIC FOR A DISH RAG!

The first direct reference to her iconic line in fan art was posted on January 31th, 2009 in another DeviantArt drawing by genevievedee.[5]

No capes! VE HUNT!! GAK 89

The templates used in memes are mainly based on two screenshots. The main one is of Edna Mode yelling "No capes!"; the second, sometimes used in combination with the other, comes from another scene of the movie in which Edna shows Helen Parr a stress test of her family's superhero costumes by immersing one in flames; she deviously smiles, and the fire is reflected in her glasses.
