Paul Robertson is an Australian animator and digital artist who is known for his pixel art sprites used in short films and video games.

History

On May 26th, 2004, Robertson created a Livejournal[1] blog but did not post until September 8th, 2005 when he featured an animated GIF of a cephalopod monster titled "TakoKing" (shown below).



Music Video

In 2005, Robertson animated the music video for the indie pop song "Do the Whirlwind" by Architecture in Helsinki (shown below).



Short Films

In 2006, Robertson animated the short film "Pirate Baby's Cabana Battle Street Fight,"[6] which featured pixel art resembling a 2D side-scroller fighting game with characters using various weapons to battle an onslaught of enemies (shown below, left). In 2008, Robertson released the film "Kings of Power 4 Billion %,"[7] which featured similar fighting game graphics and enemy battles (shown below, right).



Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World: The Game

On August 10th, 2010, the side-scrolling fighting game Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game was released on the PlayStation Network. Robertson lead the game's art direction and designed the game's sprites and effects.



Tumblr Blog

On March 3rd, 2011, Robertson launched a Tumblr[3] blog where he posts his original sprites and GIF animations.



Gravity Falls Episode

On September 14th, 2012, the Gravity Falls episode "Fight Fighter" was released, which featured pixel art animations by Robertson (shown below).



Mercenary Kings

In August 2012, Robertson launched a Kickstarter[8] for the side-scrolling shooting game Mercenary Kings, which subsequently received over $116,000 of its $75,000 goal the following month. On July 23rd, 2013, Mercenary Kings was released for the Playstation 4 video game console.
