About

Scott Pilgrim is a graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley, released between August 2004 and July 2010, by Portland-based independent comic book publisher Oni Press.[1] The series has gained a large following across the internet and real life. It is also highly enjoyed for its many video game references. The series was adapted for other media in a 2010 film and a beat 'em up video game.

Premise

The series is about 23-year-old Canadian Scott Pilgrim, a slacker and part-time musician who lives in Toronto and plays bass guitar in the band Sex Bob-omb. He becomes obsessed with American delivery girl Ramona Flowers who travels through the Sub Space Highway. One day Ramona travels through Scott's mind and she is the only thing Scott can think about. He wants to date her but must first defeat her seven evil exes and get his own life in order before he may date Ramona.

Reception

Publishers Weekly ranked the third volume, Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness, as one of the best comic books in 2006 in a critics poll. The character, Scott Pilgrim, has been ranked 85th on Wizard magazine's 2008 list of the "200 best comic book characters of all time."

Due to the popularity of the series, a movie[8] and videogame adaption[9] were both released, on August 13, 2010 and August 25, 10, respectively.

Online Relevance

The series developed a following online and has fan-art has spread on the internet including Tumblr[2], DeviantArt[3], and various Single Topic blogs as well.[4] [5] It also has a sub-reddit[6] as well as various references to it on 4chan's /co/ board[7]

2010 Film

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a 2010 comedy film by director Edgar Wright starring Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers. While the film did not succeed commercially, it received positive critic reviews and eventually gained cult following.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game is a 2010 beat 'em up video game originally released by Ubisoft for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, loosely based on the graphic novels of the same name. The game was made unavailable for purchase in December 2014. In September 2020, a remaster titled Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game – Complete Edition was announced for multiple gaming platforms.

This game became a huge examples of the dangers of digital-only media, it never had physical copies, and when the game left the digital stores, no one could buy it and only the people who bought it before that could play it.

The real issue here is not that physical media is superior, is that videogame companies should never be prevented from selling their games because a license expired, they should demand permanent licenses.
