TikTokers are going viral right now by using an Everybody Hates Chris scene to call out the most generic brands and places on earth.

The scene, which sees Chris complaining about his family buying "a big bag with one cookie in it," has been revived by the show's fans as a trend and it's been going viral all throughout April 2025.

So what exactly is the context behind the scene and how is it being used in memes? Here's what you need to know.

On November 17th, 2005, the ninth episode of Everybody Hates Chris aired on TV. The episode, titled "Everybody Hates Food Stamps," features a scene where Chris and his family go to the grocery store. Chris explains that they only buy generic brands, including "Cereal" and "a big bag with one cookie in it" simply called "Cookie," advertised in a black-and-white bag.

The scene started to inspire memes on TikTok as early as July 2024, when TikToker @izrealblud posted a video of themselves pulling a giant cookie out of the oven over the dialogue from the scene. However, the scene wouldn't go viral as a meme until nine months later in April 2025.

In April 2025, TikTokers and Instagram Reels users stared using the scene in a new way. These memes set footage of generically named brands and locations to Chris's narration. For example, a viral video that uses the audio over a photo of the water dispenser at McDonald's, simply labeled "water."

Many examples of the meme use a version of the caption "cookie ah X," "X" being the subject shown, or simply "a big bag with one cookie in it." The memes are meant to compare the generic subject to the generic cookie from Everybody Hates Chris.
