Gangnam Style is a Korean dance pop single written and performed by K-pop singer Park Jae Sung, better known by his stage name PSY. Since the release of the song and its highly entertaining music video in mid-July 2012, the video has gained more than 8 million views in the span of two weeks and spawned numerous parodies and copycat dance videos on YouTube.
The 2012 Summer Olympics was a major international multi-sport event held in London, United Kingdom from July 27th to August 12th, 2012. Due to the high profile status of the event and as with the previous games, London Olympics received intensive media coverage from all over the world, both through traditional news media outlets as well as in online social media. NASA Mohawk Guy is the nickname given to Bobak Ferdowsi, a NASA engineer and flight director of the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity mission, who was seen sporting a stylish mohawk at the mission control center during the live coverage of the Mars landing of the Curiosity in August 2012.
Botched Ecce Homo Painting, also known as "Potato Jesus", refers to the failed restoration of a century-old Spanish devotional fresco, executed by an elderly amateur art restorer. The result of the botched restoration spawned a photoshop meme, in which the ruined painting was edited in to other famous works of art, movie scenes or other memetic images.
“That Escalated Quickly” is a memorable quote said by Ron Burgundy (played by Will Farrell) in a scene from the 2004 comedy film Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. In online discussions and comments, the expression can be used in response to a remark or a situation that has quickly gotten out of hand.

Innocence of Muslims is an anti-Islam film allegedly produced and directed by Nakoula Basseley Nakoula and Alan Roberts, excerpts of which were uploaded onto YouTube in July 2012. The video rose to controversy months later in early September after an Arabic-translated version was aired on the Egyptian TV station Al-Nas.
Priority Peter is an advice animal image macro series featuring a photograph of a teenage boy holding a calculator surrounded by several young women wearing bathing suits. The captions typically consist of puns involving mathematical jargons and suggestive double entendres, some of which are set up so the last word in the top caption rhymes with the last word in the bottom caption.
Stahp, also known as “Becca Stahp”, is a four-pane comic series which typically consists of several illustrations or photographs depicting a disturbed-looking subject accompanied by captions.
iOS 6 Maps is an application packaged with Apple's iOS 6 publicly released on September 19th, 2012. Due to the amount of errors in the app, many iPhone users began posting screenshots of the faulty application or creating parodies of it, criticizing the way locations are displayed.
Grumpy Cat was a nickname given to an angry looking snowshoe cat that gained online fame after its pictures were posted to Reddit on late September 2012 and went viral. The cat is also known as "Tard" which is short for Tardar (Tartar) Sauce.
