A strange audio has been going viral on TikTok since December, and now, it's inspiring its own lip dub trend.

The audio has a fast-food worker reacting with shock after a customer refers to their french fries as "potato Jeremys," and its distinct lack of context has many wondering, where does the sound even come from?

Here's what you need to know about the viral "Potato Jeremys" meme and its origins.

What Is The 'Potato Jeremys' Meme?

In September 2023, webcomic artist Nyazsche posted a comic about a cat ordering fast food. In the comic, the cat tells the cashier that, where he's from, they call fries "potato Jeremys." Bewildered by the strange nickname for fries, the cashier responds, "Where are you from?"

The post garnered significant attention, and over a year later in December 2024, it was voiced over by E.G. Simmons. The voiceover garnered even more attention than the original comic, wracking up over 1.4 million views on TikTok alone. From there, it started inspiring animations and other memes.

How Is 'Potato Jeremys' Used In Memes?

The "potato Jeremys" audio started to become the widespread subject of memes in December 2024 and really took off in January 2025. Some of the earliest viral memes are animations, which replace the characters in the comic with other characters, such as those from Mouthwashing or Arcane, due to how similar the customer's voice is to the character Heimerdinger.

In January 2025, the audio is becoming further popularized as a lip-dub sound. In these memes, users lip-sync to the voices alongside funny captions.

Some of the most viral examples use captions about people who pronounce specific words in different ways, with the cashier's frustration being used to represent the poster's frustration.
