Arcane is an animated television series created in 2021 set in the universe of the video game League of Legends. The series was first officially announced during League of Legends' tenth anniversary and is produced by Riot Games and Fortiche Production. The original release date was scheduled for 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was rescheduled for 2021. On November 1st, 2021, it was announced that Riot Games would be celebrating the launch of Arcane through events across all of their games. The show follows the origin stories of various champions from League of Legends, including Vi and Jinx.

History

On October 15th, 2019, Riot Games showed the first trailer for Arcane. The trailer gained over 7.2 million views on YouTube in roughly two years (seen below).


In June 2020, Riot announced that the release of the series would be delayed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.[3] On September 25th, 2021, the series finally saw an official trailer, gaining over 17 million views (shown below).[1]

On November 1st, 2021, Riot announced it would launch cross-promotional events with numerous other games, including PUBG Mobile, Fortnite, and Valorant. [4] The series was officially released on Netflix on November 6th.

Reception

Upon its release, Arcane received attention and acclaim from various sources online. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 100 percent approval rating with an average rating of 8.8/10, based on 11 critic reviews. The current audience score for the show stands at 98 percent as of November 8th, 2021.[2] The series was the highest-rated "Netflix-original" property on IMDb in the days following its release.[5]

Online Presence

The series has developed a wide online presence. On Twitter, the official Arcane account[6] has over 181,000 subscribers as of November 9th, 2021. The series has been praised in Reddit threads on /r/television,[7] /r/Fantasy[8] and others.

I've a friend watching it with no knowledge of the characters beyond seeing them in LoR when he tried it.

He enjoyed it from the story and action alone.

I've another friend who knows everything about Runeterra lore.

He enjoys it for how well it represents the characters, world… how only 4 major characters in the show so far aren't champions in the game he grew up playing.

Its just a generally a good piece of animation, even just Act 1. It since its doing so well, Riots already said they're going to make more, which IM all for. Just not Ionia, please
