What do you think separates Ecchi from Hentai manga? (NSFW)

Please don't actually link some hentai, or at least spoiler (and leave a warning) for it. I'm legitimately curious about this.

So a friend of mine linked me this manga called Seishokuki. Without giving too much away it's basically about a high school girl with a huge libido who has to fight stuffed animal aliens to stop them from taking over the world. It's a ludicrous idea, but pretty damn lewd if you're into that kind of thing.

What is really odd though, is that she constantly gets raped by the stuffed animal's tentacle tongues (it makes sense in context sort of) and it shows the whole thing. No discretion shot, they just censor the naughty bits. This isn't a one-off thing, it happens throughout the whole series.

The thing is, I've seen hentai that is much less explicit (since all porn in Japan requires censoring) where it's just a loving couple who have sex for like a few pages. Yet this series is considered "mature" (as in young adult like Great Teacher Onizuka or High School of the Dead) while the latter will be considered porn. What exactly is the difference? Don't say that sex isn't the main focus, because that definitely is the main focus of Seishokuki while I've read hentai that have a huge focus on story to the point that the sex is secondary.

If a story like the one I posted can be considered just "ecchi" then what exactly makes something hentai?

Ecchi is just a manga with a lot of fanservice and it teases a lot, but there are no "graphic" scenes.

Hentai is full on porn. Nothing else.

Ecchi anime/manga can actually have a good story (kill la kill for example) and hentai stories are just there to set up the sex scenes. It's sort of like the difference between movies that show scantily clad girls and straight up porn.

But granted there can be some hentai that are clearly focused on the sex that can also have a decent story.

Ecchi has Nudity, Panty-shots, Clothing Damage etc. for fan-service. Sometimes you see intimate parts, sometimes it's censored, there may be accidental/comedic grouping or face-plants into boobs.

What separates Ecchi from Hentai is Ecchi does not show sexual contact, as in man fingering vagina, or outright sex. Hentai does show that, even if it's censored (with a millimeter thick censor bar)

Focus-wise, both can have good plots, but it's rarer to find a Hentai that isn't just straight up porn than Ecchi that's nothing but fan-service. Some Ecchi's use fan-service as the main attraction, others just have it as a cherry on top.

Cage of Eden is one such manga, with panty-shots and nude woman galore (You never see a vagina, but you do see faintly there nipple and full on butt) but it has an interesting story which is the focus of the manga.

See that's the thing. Not to sound condescending or anything, but I don't think anyone here has actually looked at the link I posted to that manga.

In this manga characters (all links NSFW btw) get screwed by tentacles, do 69, and masturbates with a vibrator.

Now I'm not trying to circumvent the rules by posting hentai, the thing is that all of those pages come from the manga I linked in the original post. Which is hosted on a non-h site. The main focus of the series is on sex, the chapters are even referred to as "orgasms". Yet for whatever reason it is considered ecchi and not hentai. That's what I'm really curious about.

Largely what I think is happening is a loophole of mangahere's rules.

Unlike E-Hentai where the rule is very simpily "Doujin Content not available through commercial retail" or something along those lines, Seishokuki is available in public stores. And since it's available as such, it can be displayed on MangaHere.

That's just speculation though. What you are looking at is very much a Hentai, just not labeled as such so it can remain on the website.

I think you just found a weird series that loopholes its way into being Ecchi but doesn't belong in that category.

I dunno… In Wolf Guy a character gets graphically raped for almost 30 chapters and in Yuria Type 100 almost every chapter someone has or attempts to have sex or masturbate (though it makes sense within the plot of the story).

Is it really that slight distinction on being made for the sex scenes and having graphic sex scenes the difference between porn and ecchi?

Honestly I'd also call those two manga hentais. Anything that takes their stuff beyond cheesecake and fanservice and takes into graphic penetration shots should be called hentai.

But it's the same as movie rating systems in America I guess. PG-13 has movies that shouldn't be in there like Dark Knight, Taken, and Red Dawn. And R ratings have movies that should be PG-13 if not PG, such as The King's Speech and Breakfast Club.

So basically, Ratings are like Power Levels, both are mostly bullshit.

Not to sound rude, but don't expect people to read through a manga you linked, you have to post direct examples. People aren't gonna read through a 30 chapter manga just to answer a question..

It would seem that there are two reasons why it is classified as "Ecchi' "Mature"
Reason one is that, at least in the links shown, genitals are not shown. Nipples are allowed in Ecchi, but not shown sexual contact, which to be honest, it seems like this manga is skirting that line dangerously close.
Reason two is that the mods might personally like the manga and are skirting the rules.

I don't think there really is a distinct line between Ecchi and Hentai and it's mostly up to personal opinion where that line is. This seems so close to that line that some people might call it Mature Ecchi, others might call it Hentai.

Um, no. Linking to any pornographic sites or content is strictly prohibited in the forums. Regardless of what crosses the line between "ecchi" and "hentai" we still need to adhere to the rules on this specific site.

Yummines, I'm going to have to remove the links in your posts as they contain graphic sexual content that definitely goes against site rules. If people want to know what you're talking about, they will have to look into it themselves or just have to take your word for it. In the future please refer to our NSFW guidelines for future reference or when in doubt contact a moderator to ask if something is appropriate. I'm also going to add a NSFW warning to the thread title.

Fair enough. I wasn't going to post images but as someone already mentioned in the thread people weren't going to look at the manga without me actually posting direct examples (even though there's a pretty clear example on the first chapter).

But that's just making excuses I should be fine.
