Ever sense she felt something when she hugged him I guess.

And will this change things between them?

Who knows really. Only studio B knows.

On the topic of new alicorns:
Yes, your headcanon will be obliterated. Deal with it. It's not the first time the show's done that, and it's not gonna be the last. Every time it's happened so far, we've been pleasantly surprised, so just have some faith in the writers. It'll probably be alright in the end.

On the topic of Rarity:
I was under the impression that she's always been aware of Spike's crush (it's not like he does a good job of hiding it). This is just my interpretation, but when Rarity gave Spike that look at the end of 'Secret of my Excess', I think it was her way of saying, "I already know, and I'm grateful for your affection". I highly doubt they'll ever get romantically involved, since Rarity is probably aware that Spike's crush is simply a childish fantasy. They're also different species. I can see that getting in the way too.

As for me knowing X-singular, yeah we go way back (a little while.) But I know his avatar from one of the most consistent webcomics out there. If you've read Sinfest before, then you know how many strips there are. I've read all of them. So that means I've had a lot of time on my hands in life I really like the comic.
