Another discussion: Today we saw that Granny Smith is probably 100+ years old, so the human-scale lifespan of the ponies has been demonstrated. But, Celestia is hundreds, if not thousands of years old, and Luna too, so here's the question. Is their longevity due to them being royal or to them being alicorns? That is to say, do all alicorns experience extended lifespans, or is it just the royals?

I know the common answer will be "magic." Yes. I agree that it probably is magic. But how do the lifespans of the tribes compare? If it is a magic thing, do unicorns and alicorns live longer than earth ponies and pegasi? Or is longevity a specifically-alicorn power?

I always thought it was because they are Goddesses, but maybe it extends to all alicorns. We might just find out when the new alicorn shows up at the end of thus season.

@Connor: Does she know that you like ponies? If she doesn't then just say that you heard about it on the internet and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. The downside is that you wouldn't be able to do anything pony related while she's around anymore.

@Opspe: I think that ponies live longer than humans do but alicorns (being great magical beings) have a longer lifespan then other ponies. Of course this could go on to say: Magic = longer lifespan. Therefore unicorns would live longer than the other ponies. And if we assumed that would their lifespan depend on the strength of their magic? How long would Twilight live in that case? How about Rarity? And Trixie?

We still have no idea how old Granny Smith is exactly. I kinda doubt she's several hundred years old. I think Ponyville was already sorta established, but when the Apples came to town and started making stuff, it caused a massive surge in popularity of the region, increasing population enough to make it a real town.
Of course, that's besides the point.
As for the alicorn thing, it could be either. I need to know more about… Whatsherface, Candence? I need to know more about what exactly the Hell she is before I can really form an answer.
But as for now, at least, I'm saying Luna and Celestia are the only alicorns (YES I'M PERFECTLY AWARE CANDENCE IS AN ALICORN SHUT UP). Methinks it's because they're, well, physical f**king goddesses. I mean, they have complete control over the sun and moon, plus probably a lot of other things we're not aware of as of now.

@Cite and Raymond: It did occur to me that they might be immortal due to being gods, but I'm not entirely sure about that. I'm inclined to think that they're more like demi-gods (here I come, moon), and are probably not immortal. I think this because, anthropologically speaking, a true god would account for multiple aspects of the narrative myth; Celestia and Luna account only for certain aspects to Equestria's cosmology, and appear to have nothing to do with its cosmogyny (how it was created), hence my demi-god label.

@Connor: Using the family iPad for ponies was a bit sloppy. In the future I would try to keep it on your own comp, no matter how tempted you may be.
