At least the image served its purpose.

Go ahead and start a thread in Site-Related about this and post the image there… If nobody else has done so already

@Electric

Well if its negative karma you want, that's easy. Go start a thread that begs for positive karma. You will get negative karma in an instant!

(Please don't actually do that)

I HAVE A TOPIC IDEA. BEHOLD MORTALS, MY FIRST TL;DR:

After recently seeing a certain image which I will not be posting here, I've been left wondering about certain properties of unicorn horns. Like how sharp are unicorn horns really? I mean, really, they are horns, which are typically used in our animal kingdom for displays of dominance and other such things, but since their purpose seems to be totally different in the MLP world (and also both males and females possess them in full), would them being sharp enough to inflict wounds on others even be necessary? Are they simply dull protrusions of bone (or whatever they may be made of) or will any unicorn unfortunate enough to find himself on the wrong end of one be fresh out of luck?

This leads me to my next thought: Can they be sharpened? Is it possible to wear away at the horn until it is sharp enough to be used as a weapon, or will it:

  • Be too painful (assuming there are nerve endings in unicorn horns)?
  • Break because they're too brittle (this would be the case if they are in fact not made of bone)?
  • Effect the magical properties of the horn?

The final one intrigues me the most. Yes, discussions of the anatomy of the horn or its make-up would be interesting, but how exactly are unicorn horns tied to the magical nature of unicorns? Are they themselves magic, or are they simply conduits for magic that exists inside (or maybe even outside!) the unicorn? If a unicorn loses part of, or all of, its horn, how will its magical ability be affected? Must the horn remain in a perfect state for it to be of use, or will it simply decrease in magical potency depending on the severity of its damage? As a final note for this thought, I am quite sure that some crazy young unicorn at one point tried to sharpen his horn, but what I'm asking is if that is a somewhat common practice among more aggressive unicorns.

Now to my next thought! If the horn is damaged, can it either:

  • Grow back biologically
  • Repair itself with its own magic
  • Be repaired by outside magic

I mean, think about it, if a unicorn loses its horn and that's its only means of using magic, its pretty much screwed. Even earth ponies have a connection with the land that pegasi and unicorns do not, so without its horn, a unicorn is no better than a really smart horse.

In the end, I'm simply swamped by all of these thoughts and questions about unicorns (and by extension Alicorns) that may or may not have been brought up before and I want everyone else's thoughts on the matter!

TL;DR – I'm curious about the properties of unicorn horns. DISCUSS.

P.S. I'm assuming this would be considered a TL;DR, but I really have no idea how long it is. If it's not, whatever.

@StarGazer

Are they simply dull protrusions of bone (or whatever they may be made of) or will any unicorn unfortunate enough to find himself on the wrong end of one be fresh out of luck?

Well, they certainly look dull in most cases. But then, there's this guy and probably a whole bunch of other background ponies with clearly sharp horns. And we've seen the dull-looking versions pierce through stuff as well, so it's pretty damn hard to say just how sharp they usually are. Probably the best answer would be "As sharp as the writers need them to be".

Can they be sharpened? Is it possible to wear away at the horn until it is sharp enough to be used as a weapon, or will it:
* Be too painful (assuming there are nerve endings in unicorn horns)?
* Break because they’re too brittle (this would be the case if they are in fact not made of bone)?
* Effect the magical properties of the horn?

In the spa sequence in Green isn't you color, Rarity got her horn filed like a nail. There wasn't any apparent pain reaction, but that could be because the filing was light or because Rarity's used to it. Since we've seen ponies with sharp horns, it's safe to assume they won't break because of brittleness. No idea about the possible effects on magic use.

I'm thinking the conduit theory sounds a bit more plausible, since it would explain how unicorns can learn magic. If it was only the horn that's magic, a unicorn would be limited to whatever power they have when their horn reaches full growth. Since Twilight seems to improve her abilities without visible horn growth, it seems the more likely answer.

As for damage, hard to say since we haven't seen any unicorns with horn damage. But, we did see Twilight's horn become useless when affected by Poison Joke in Bridle gossip, so it's safe to assume the state of the horn does have an effect on its potency.

I am quite sure that some crazy young unicorn at one point tried to sharpen his horn, but what I’m asking is if that is a somewhat common practice among more aggressive unicorns.

Well, who's to say horn sharpness isn't genetic? Maybe some unicorns just naturally develop sharp horns as they grow. Again, hard to say with the limited evidence available.

If the horn is damaged, can it either:
* Grow back biologically
* Repair itself with its own magic
* Be repaired by outside magic

Growing back is unlikely, or at least extremely slow, so that can be safely ruled out. Since the horn seems to be the requirement for magic use, it most likely can't be repaired alone. Since we've seen no unicorns with damaged horns, I'd assume they can be fixed fairly easily. Or horn damage is fatal, but that's not likely given the nature of the show.

You didn't say anything about horn lengths, though, which is pretty surprising considering how in-depth your post is otherwise. So, here's some thoughts on that:

It doesn't seem to affect the potency, since Twilight's horn is bog-standard in appearance but she's clearly very powerful. Conversely, we haven't seen unicorns with bigger horns (such as Fancy Pants) do much more than basic psychokinesis (which is the proper, grammatically correct term for telekinesis). Then again, the princesses have larger horns and greater power. But they are special cases anyhow, so it's a bit of a moot point.

So, in conclusion, horn length seems to be largely arbitrary. However, it seems unicorns in positions of power have larger horns, so perhaps the size is some sort of status symbol. Of course, this begs the question of whether longer horns are natural or artificially augmented.

You should also post moar. How are you still a lurker? And everything you said echoed what I would have said precisely. No fair.

Seconding everything in this post (except whether or not Brownmane getting to the draw first is unfair.)

Level up already, Brownmane.

@OmniXVII

An anatomy book is generally more drawing than writing, though. Not saying I can't draw, of course, just saying.

Then again, maybe the anatomy books I've been looking at are more… "artistic", shall we say, than what a doctor might peruse.

@dravitar

I'd post more if I wasn't busy with exams and other shite of that sort. The fact that my timezone doesn't gel well with most of you folks doesn't help either.

The lurker status, as far as I can tell, is the result of a small number of posts within a large span of time. Tends to happen when you're either studying or asleep when most of the discussions happen.

@Verbose

But if I level up, I'll have to chose a new perk. I'll spend hours agonizing over whether I want better tl;dr or more lolwut, and right now I need to sharpen up my math, dammit!

Since this post is somewhat lacking in pony, let's see what I can conjure up:

(Fun fact: I'm the one responsible for this image. Saw some ponies 'shopped into photos, figured it would be a fun little project and whipped that up one bored afternoon.)

>goes to class
>Listens to Ipod
>Friend ask if he can borrow the buds
>I agree and unplugged it.
>Sister Hate was playing loudly in class
>Class wonders what I listen to all period.

I'm a quiet person and I barely talk in class so they have no idea what I like or listen to at all. Only my friends actually know. If you don't know Sister Hate then here it is.

That was pretty funny, and the animation wasn't bad at all.

Soon, the internet will be ours.

Edit: @Algernon about My Little Dashie:

Not sure why exactly it made me cry so much, but it just… did. I didn't think to much about it, really. It's odd. I didn't cry reading Old Yeller, Black & White, during the Titanic, etc. etc., but I did reading that (and Thai Life Insurance), for some reason. It's hard to explain in words, but it just tugged at my heartstrings. It was set up fairly well, and the events that did make me cry were executed in a way that made it sadder than everything else I've ever read/seen.

But seriously, I can't remember ever crying for any movies or stories. I get depressed after watching, but I just don't cry that much. The closest I got to crying( got chocked up) was life is beautiful.

Maybe ill get a chance to drink some of that chocolate rain…

I have also heard speculation that he is coming back to play Shining Armour. How trippy would that be?

I hope you are wrong about that. I want discord back, not his voice on twilights brother.

Did I just give you karma for calling me a homosexual?

Why, yes. Yes I did.

@Discord conversation: He might not come back as Discord. It's not entirely likely.

Although, I heard a theory that Twilight TECHNICALLY mind-raped her friends when she un-discorded them. She restored their personalities and memories using her letters, supposedly, which contained HER interpretations of them. So they fit her views of their personalities more. AJ is more honest, Rarity more dramatic, RD more cocky, Fluttershy more of a doormat, etc.

Now, from here on out it's my speculation, but there might be an episode in the future (probably the season 3 pilot if anything) that reveals this and resolves it. Discord might be involved, for obvious reasons. Again, this is just speculation on my part.

But, that raises the question on whether or not they even record lines for the new season this early. If they don't, my speculation is probably moot.

Either way, John De Lancie!

Edit: How could I forget this?

Considering how Rarity files her horn in the Spa, I would assume it grows, similar to how nails and hair grow on humans.

IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION!

Shining Armour is played by Braeburn's Voice actor. This was confirmed months ago on the VA's own twitter.

I look forward to many trippy Braeburn and Shining Armour fics now.

In addition, I got a friend of mine to draw me more Applejack. She's only a casual fan of MLP (and think the older generations look cuter. MADNESS!) but I pester her enough to draw me ponies from time to time.

She prefers drawing humanoids and finds equines hard to draw but I think she did well.

Why don't we see more Applejack and Winona pics/fics?

More Discord? Yesyesyesyesyes!

But if you think about it, would they really have introduced a character with as much Equestrian historical relevance (and all around awesomeness) as Discord only to use him in a couple episodes? I think not!

Now if you'll excuse me…

I think a chocolate milk of glass is in order!

For those that don't know, "Anon in Equestria" threads on /mlp/ are threads where people post silly greentext stories of themselves struggling to fit in Equestria.

Unfortunately, a few namefags have FUCKED IT UP FOR EVERYONE! and started posting epic length huge multipart shitty self insert clopfics. Still there are the odd gems. And I even made my own greentext anon in equestria story. Tell me what you think:

>In Equestria hugging ponies
>They're a little weirded out but allow me my indulgence
>Hug Pinkie Pie
>Nearly fracture spine
>sours hugging experience for me
>Next day, Pinkie sees me and stretches arms, expecting hug
>Angrily reply in the negative
>Pinkie becomes sadstraighthair!Pinkie
>Pinkie begs for forgiveness all day, really annoying
>Manage to give her the slip
>She destroys my car in an attempt to upgrade it with new brake pads as a "sorry" gift
>Yell at her
>Knock on door later that day
>Giant cake with two dolls of me and Pinkie hugging on top
>Pinkie giving pleading look
>Close door in face
>Woken up late at night by loud music
>Pinkie Pie outside window blaring "Never Gonna Give you Up" oblivious to troll meaning
>Shut window
>Wake up tommorow fucked up from too little sleep
>Pinkie Pie shows up
>Here we fucking go again
>She tearfully apologizes for everything and promises to leave me alone
>As she walks away, my cold black heart is shattered
>I call back
>Open my arms for a hug
>Is embraced forcefully by Pinkie Pie, with curly hair back

As I have said in my previous post:

I don't want him to play Shining Armour. John De Lancie just sounds to old for the character.

But anyway
If you guys haven't seen it, some foreign magazine published a fairly neural and comprehensive brony article. You can find it here.

As for humanization, it's okay… I prefer ponies drawn as ponies.
Anthro is slightly better, but it still creeps me out a bit depending on how it was drawn
