You know, I didn't like Rarity much at first, but over time I'd say she has become one of the better characters on the show.

Oh crap, I forgot it's saturday!

Finally got to see this one and the previous one today. I have to say I really didn't like the jarring style of the Timber Wolves. It didn't match their season 2 style at all, and they look much more like 3-D CGI and have black outlines (which almost nothing in the show has). I'm willing to give a half pass on them, as they are semi-other worldly compared to things in Ponyvillie, but I hope that this style isn't used else where. Still, the combined version was cool, even though his defeat was pretty lame and made no sense (if it is a mystical creature made of wood, I doubt it would have lungs, so I don't see how it would be possible for it to choke.) After seeing the Timber Wolves, I was afraid it would be on my least favorite list, but it ended up "okay" IMO.

So, two things; New Episode, and My own stuff.

Things we learned in the new episode:
Spike is a duty Whore…
AJ can't possibly think of ways to get past that (I can think of 5, starting with, "I COMMAND you to take a break!")
The Ponies are bad Actors.

So! new episode.

I had a good chuckle over Rainbow Dash's mention of her fanfic and Pinkie's mustache. I don't care much that the timberwolves were 3D – it was just cool seeing them again. (not to mention seeing applejack fuck them up. Holy shit). Also I assume that the timberwolves must have some kind of respiratory system going on in there to produce that bad breath of theirs so the final boss chocking on a rock doesn't even bother me for that reason (and it wouldn't have even if I didn't think of that anyways), it's just that given how violently they let applejack deal with them I was surprised Spike didn't just make a campfire out of it instead – He's burnt things without sending them to Celestia before, right?

Overall though I liked this one a lot, especially because of the dialog.

The episode was decent overall, Rainbow Dash being a 'novelist' gag and the following retort by Rarity had me in stitches for a few good minutes. Yet like all the other Spike centric episodes i couldn't really super enjoy it, but it still was a pretty good on Par episode.

Anyway, i'm off to camp out at FimFiction or something until somebrony writes that Rainbow Dash story as a trollfic or something. TO THE LURKZONE!

I happened to once entertain the thought of a Fic where RD wites a story about an author that writes about RD who writes about the Author…

I then proceeded to beat the Stupid out of my head against my desk.

The CGI Timberwolves were alright, but they looked out of place. I would've preferred if they used the same design from season 2. However, I did like the giant Timberwolf. Also, I liked that Spike defeated the Timberwolf by throwing a rock at it. It was funny to me because I wasn't expecting it.

Overall, I say it's a decent episode.

Okay, now this was a fun little episode!
Certainly not the greatest thing ever, but still very nice and enjoyable.
In an odd way, I think I ended up liking all the little character moments more than I cared about the overarching plot (which was a little bland).

Just to get it out of the way, apparently Twilight does not own that balloon, Cherry Berry does:

(She was also seen falling to her near-doom in Mare-Do-Well.)
She must rent it out or something because it doesn't seem very difficult for other ponies to get their hooves on it.

Timberwolves:
Honestly, in this one odd case, I think I can safely say that a spoiler actually helped me enjoy an episode more.
I had heard about the CG wolves before seeing them and, while I too felt that they looked a bit out of place, the fact that I was expecting them probably lessened my reaction to them and kept them from really bugging me in any significant way.
The fact that they were pretty well-animated didn't hurt either.


(That 'Just a sec' finger! Ha!)

Now, character moments.
I only noticed after it finished, but this episode actually managed to give all the members of the main cast at least one little moment to themselves that expanded on their personalities a bit.

I loved Spike's Twilight-esque list, showing that he seems to emulate her just like a little kid might do.

Applejack is a wolf-murdering machine!

I also really liked her telling Spike to save himself at the end when she was really trapped.
Very noble.

Twilight's OCD made me laugh pretty hard.

It's canon people: Rainbow Dash writes crappy Rainbow Dash fanfiction!

I think I died.
And her 'plan' for getting rid of Spike was also characteristically short-sightedand hilarious.

The music during Rarity's epic pie scene was perfect!
Go back and listen to it if you didn't pick up on it before.

I also really liked her trying to teach Applejack how to act.
Rarity has always been the most… emotive, and seeing her try to explain it was funny.

Even Fluttershy got to be helpful by giving AJ the whole 'lie to Spike' plan.
I'm still not entirely sure why she needed those things on her feet to make a sound that was essentially just the ponies' normal walking noise, but it was cute and it worked so whatever!

"Wait! I have a question!"

Oh my god, that was so absolutely perfect!
The timing, the faces, the delivery, everything.
That was a perfectly delivered gag.
Probably one of my biggest laughs this season.

So yes, not the ultimate episode ever, but overall:

I thought this was a bad episode. I don't hate it (I don't hate any of the episodes) I just thought it was really bad. I am surprised people didn't pick this episode apart like they did to Wonderbolts Academy. That episode deserves all the criticism in the world but this gets off scott free? That bothers me a lot. The episode was very predictable, which is a shame because MLP episodes usually surprise me with something. Spike being so clumsy felt weird to me. I can understand him not being able to cook, but I feel that him being incapable of cleaning didn't make much sense. As Twilight's assistant, she probably has him clean all the time! I was never a fan of 2D animation being mixed with CG, and this episode is no different. It just felt too out of place for me. Also, I hate when writers make Rarity super shallow and selfish for the sake of comedy. I love Rarity, but I hate the way some writers portray her. The only saving grace for me in this episode were the jokes focusing around the other members of the Mane 6, mostly Dash and Twilight. I don't hold any personal vendetta against MLP or think the show betrayed me over this episode, but I thought this episode was B-A-D.

Now that you mention it, my Reaction could be summed up by how surprised I was at how predictable they were being.

It's like:

"…Oh my god! They're actually doing this recycled plot! They couldn't, it would be seen from a mile away! They're actually doing this, they're making this happen! GAH! They did it! I knew it, but didn't believe it!"

If the plot wasn't so obvious, I'd have been less worked up. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen.

But really, if they had a more unpredictable plot, I wouldn't have felt like the episode was so out of place, and I wouldn't have been "Surprised" Paradoxically. Perhaps because I'd have no preconceptions of what came next, and thus wouldn't have one to break.

GAH! How is it that stuff I know concretely being true surprises me, while stuff out of nowhere just gets me to nod in approval, as if I knew it was coming all along? Is my mind really so chaotic that chaos is expected?! Is my entire being so mangled up with the essence of the unknown that I can accept things I wasn't expecting in any real sense without being surprised, yet just give me ONE PRE-DICT-ABLE EV-ENT! And I'm expecting at any minute they'll pull a plot twist?!

I mean…

IS IT, SUPPOSED! TO BE STICK DUDES?!

I will admit, the way Spike defeated the timberwolf was very funny and was one of the few things in this episode that I couldn't predict. Although, Spike probably could've used his fire breath the whole time (we saw that his flames can set wood on fire just one episode ago) but I'll just say that he was in a stressful/panicky situation which probably would make him unable to use his fire or the thought would never occur to him because he was in such a tight situation.

Succintly as possible, this was probably the worst "episode" of the season, in my opinion. By far.

Simultaneously, it's the episode I'd want to watch over and over again, where other episodes don't seem to have that rerun value. I thoroughly…thoroughly enjoyed it. It's been a while since I couldn't wait to watch an episode again.

First off, Dave Polsky isn't the credited writer/storywriter for the next episode in a few weeks (as burning_phoneix pointed out), but he was credited along with Merriwether Williams.
 
I agree with Locks on the the fact that Spike is probably highly adept at cleaning and assisting from the time he's spent with Twilight. There was no reason at all for him to be unable to cook, clean, or generally assist.

The Timberwolves…

…did look out of place. It was "jarring" as Jacob said, and had I not read a comment about CGI Timberwolves like DeadParrot did, I might have been more distracted by it.

I think the joke is funny, but like the comments in this image from Derpibooru say, I like the fact that the creators still feel like they can experiment with different styles. The show style is still the same, and I'm glad that they feel the need to be creative still.
 
And then the plot itself wasn't all that interesting. I don't really watch FiM for plot twists, but this story was particularly predictable (and it felt like it had a lot of filler. The episode seemed to go on for longer than it technically needed to.)
 
But having said all of that, I probably enjoyed it more than just about any other episode this season for many of the reasons already listed. I do like the character interaction, and I feel like some combinations were addressed here in the "filler" that could always stand to be written out in an episode. I could watch Rarity and Applejack interact in their own scene by itself without an episode. They work so well together (I do think that her more shallow traits are more entertaining, but I do believe that her generosity and work-ethic will be exhibited more in the future just like Dash's loyalty to her friends was exhibited.

Also, the gags were pretty freakin' hilarious. Twilight OCD and Applejack taking advantage of it? Rarity giving AJ a lesson in being a damsel in distress? Spike's critique of the fake Timber Wolf? Pinkie's insistence on using that mustache. All were moments that made me giggle more than other episodes this season.
 
 
In a way, I would have expected the story to be conceived by Williams and it to have been written by Polsky (as opposed to how it was in the opening credits where Williams is credited with writing the episode and the story was by Polsky.) It felt Polsky-esque and Williams-ish simultaneously, which might be a terrible combination for some people.

I generally don't like the episodes (most certainly not love) Williams is credited with writing, but I love Polsky's episodes. The combination was different, but…I'd actually want to see more collaboration like that. It seemed like less of an episode and more of a character "sketch," and I thoroughly enjoyed it for that.

Who wouldn’t? But notably her passions focus towards THE INTERSECTION OF FANTASY WITH SCIENCE. With a lot of the stuff she likes, she can trace their origins back to LYRA HEARTSTRINGS. She also has some measure of Pride for her Nation: THE LUNAR REPUBLIC.

What will she do?

Well, considering how little Questions are being Asked on this, look like it's going to be just our little thing until then. So far, just for KYM Pony General. (And Maybe Homestuck General if I can get them interested.)

Yeah, I hate to jump on the bandwagon here, but it wasn't that great of an episode. This was the first episode that didn't manage to make me stay on its tab for a significant amount of time, and that bothers me that it wasn't interesting enough for me. Now note, I did have audio, so I was aware of what was going on and do have an opinion on the episode.

I didn't know about the CGI wolves until now, but I do agree, they did look a bit out of place. I don't feel like they looked bad, though. They really fit in well with the overall art style of the show. Honestly, until it was pointed out and I looked at the gifs here, I didn't think anything was significantly wrong; I just put it down to a lower-quality model due to them not using it often.

The plot was pretty average, and some of the points were way out there. We've been over how Twilight is an awful librarian a long time ago, and how Spike must be picking up all of the slack, so why does it make any sense that he's clumsy, messy, and disorganized? It doesn't, that's how.

Yet with everything bad about it, a lot of the writing was pretty great. Once again, we had the total failure to read body language, but as I've said, I expect that anymore, and it makes for good sight gags. The jokes on different characters' personalities were pretty great (I loved Rarity acting, especially as she ran away), and I loved the part with the fake wolf. And the MUSTACHE. They really have something for mustaches.

Seriously, are we still on about that? Wonderbolt Academy is a bad episode, one of the poorest in the show, and they should have stuck with the other ending. Agree or disagree, but I don't see what it has to do with your or anyone else's opinion of the new episode.

As it turns out, I DO dislike several aspects of this episode, though I agree with Verbose's opinion that there were some real redeeming moments in those little interactions between the characters. I laughed several times, and I didn't really have a problem with the animation of the timber wolves. Even if it seemed "jarring" to some, it's hardly a huge issue; just a minor nuisance at worst.

Anyway, I find it rather noteworthy that you would mention your distaste of how Rarity is portrayed in an episode like this. If there's anything I've come to expect from a Williams script, it's exaggerated character portrayals and disregard for past development and lessons learned. That's largely why Putting Your Hoof Down is the worst episode in the series, and The Mysterious Mare Do Well is so widely ill-received. It seems to be why Wonderbolt Academy made Dash and Pinkie feel like they were completely different people, while botching the chance to give a certain one-shot character some depth. Good points are sprinkled throughout all of these episodes, but they tend to overdo things to the point that they become far less enjoyable.

In the case of Spike At Your Service, I think everyone can pretty clearly see the biggest problems. There's really no reason for Spike to have been turned into such a huge klutz and a dunderhead all of a sudden. His so-called Dragon Code came out of nowhere, was never explained, and he was honestly being annoying about it.

It was also strange that the normally wise Applejack wouldn't have set him straight sooner, and frankly, the scenario of Dash showing up out of nowhere as a plot device is getting pretty typical.

One could go into far greater detail about this (and elsewhere I already have, as a matter of fact), but there's little cause if you ask me. The majority of the fandom has already decided that it's not really a killer episode, so there's not a whole lot of available debate.

More relevant, however, is the fact that even though the story is pretty much lame, I don't feel the need to continue bashing it because it made me laugh. The feel-good moments were enough to counter the annoying stuff.

I agree that Wonderbolt Academy should've gone with the other ending, but I wouldn't call it one of the poorest in the show. Personally, I thought Rainbow Dash was certainly in character for the whole thing, and she actually got some decent character development, which, frankly, has been sparse in pretty much all of the more recent episodes. Pinkie Pie was a bit extreme, yes, but personally I found it hilarious, and Pinkie Pie is just an extreme character, so whadda gon' do.

Now, new episode. First and foremost, the Timberwolves. I actually quite liked them. I liked their style, I liked the fact they were a departure from the normal animation. We've seen some stuff like this before, namely that scene in the season 2 premier, when Discord appears in the window and we got that awesome 3-D transition rotating around the hallway. I hadn't even taken up animating at that point, and that scene still stuck with me. So personally, I thought the Timberwolves were excellent and not particularly out of place. And I have a virulent prejudice against 3-D animation, so for me to say this is quite something.

But there were things besides Timberwolves! There was a dragon. Yes, I really did not like the way they cast Spike as a skippy knucklehead, and yes, he pulled that Dragon Code on us out of nowhere. Yes, Applejack should have just told him that her one desire was for him to leave her alone or something. Yes, Rainbow Dash didn't really have any role in the episode, though I admit I laughed out loud at her novel. Yes, Twilight getting caught up in her books and not paying attention has been done to death. Yes, I got fooled by the fake Timberwolf, too. But like Verbose said, for all its flaws, I got enough enjoyment out of it to justify waking up at seven in the morning to catch the livestream for the first time this season. Verbose took it a bit too the extreme when he said he'd watch it again, but I would agree that it was one heckuva entertaining train wreck. I would still call it one of the weakest episodes in the whole show, but its individual gags, like Rainbow Dash's novel or Spike defeating Giant Crit-Boosted Deflector Timberwolf with a single pebble, managed to keep it going, even if it had its cringe-worthy moments along the way. So I laughed at the episode, but didn't really enjoy it as a whole.

I'm gonna go with the opposite opinion here: This is one of the best episodes of the show so far.

If you couldn't guess the ending to a show made for little girls with 90% accuracy within 5 minutes. You need to read more stories.

It is one of the most common complaints I see whenever an episode comes out and I never really understood it. Of course it's predictable! You expected Rainbow Dash NOT to choose the Turtle in May the Best Pet Win? You expected the CMC not to apologize at the end of Ponyville Confidential?

This is one of my favourite episodes because it had the least amount of plot and just let the characters be cute and amusing which is the #1 reason I watch the show in the first place. The juxtaposition of having the hardest working pony get a clutzy assistant made me chuckle a whole lot more than any episode of any season (and how Rarity and Dash wish they had a slave assistant). The extreme lengths that Spike went to be dutiful amuse me (Counting blades of grass, building rock towers…etc) and the whole incredibly bad "fake Timberwolf" situation at the end cracked me up (Rarity over acting, Pinkie Pie and AJ's terrible under acting…etc) .

When I first heard about the episode I thought it would be SOLELY AJ and Spike but in the end they managed to work all the characters in there amusingly which I liked.

The "plot" of MLP is usually my least favourite part of the series since it IS intended for little children, so an episode that says "FUCK YOU PLOT! IMMA DO MY OWN SHIT" is an episode I like.

What? What else do you want from me? What I didn't like about the episode?

Fine, I'll share what I didn't like:

-The CGI on the Timberwolves looked off. I'm not a fan of CGI at all but for some reason….the Big Bad Timberwolf at the end looked GOOD (and the "hold on one sec" pose got a chuckle out of me) but not the ones at the beginning….I have no idea how that works.

-Spike not knowing how to cook. I can get he's bad at doing chores he's not used to (The most we see him doing at Twilight's is cleaning up books and sweeping) but it's been established that he knows how to bake. I can get the excuse that he's bad at baking PIES in particular but it's still an excuse.

And I guess that's it? As I said, I don't really care about the plot in most of these pony episodes so it's not a negative for me.

{color:#002366} I don't hate the episode, but for some reason, my alarm bells began to ring when the announced the "Let's put ourselves in a position of trouble" Plan was announced.

I'm all Like "NO, STOP! DON'T DO THAT! WHY ARE YOU BEING STUPID?!"

It becomes a horror movie to the intellect, and I begin to squirm in my seat… Unable to watch, yet unable to pull myself away! Knowing the "Killer" is right behind the door, yet I can't tell them not to open it!

…Actually, that may be a fun experience in itself!

Much like every episode, this comes down to personal preference. And the fact we all have divided opinions show it's doing it's job of engaging us.

I already went into what I liked about this episode up above but I'll just say it again.
It fell securely into the 'middle of the pack.'
Plenty of faults, but also plenty of redeeming qualities too.

(I should also reiterate that I have never 'hated' an episode. There are certainly some I enjoy more than others, but all of them have fallen on the 'good' side of the spectrum for me.)

I do agree with Phoenix that 'unpredictability' has never really been the show's major strength as it is designed for children to be able to follow, but to me the problem wasn't with predictability, but… blandness, I guess.
In May the Best Pet Win, yes, we all knew she would pick the TORTOISE (Fluttershy is disappoint, Phoenix), but it was the way she ended up making the choice that made it interesting (plus a cool song in there was nice).
This episode just didn't feel as… dynamic for whatever reason, even despite the multiple wild animal attacks.
Again, the character interactions more than made up for it in my mind, but the issue still exists.

It was never part of their plan to put themselves into actual danger.
They were attempting to fake it when real Timberwolves attacked.
(I love the implication that it was Rainbow Dash's freakishly accurate howling that seemed to attract them.)

The one significant thing that I would like to bring up is the common complaint about Spike being overly useless.
Yes, it is true that he is apparently unable to do a number of things that we have seen him do before, but I honestly took it as a part of his character in this instance.
I saw it like a little kid who is so eager to help his mommy carry in the groceries (because he desperately wants her approval) that he suddenly forgets how to walk and crashes right into a door.
Spike got carried away with his desire to pay back his debt that he ended up just charging into situations in arm-flailing servitude.
I will admit that that angle could have been expanded on a little bit more to make it more clear, but that's what was going through my mind.

She's still getting used to typing with hooves, but Lyra's been surfing the net for a little while now and seems to be having a lot of fun!

She keeps Mini-Bonbon nearby most of the time as a reminder of home, I guess.

And The Doctor has been screwing with the laws of reality on a semi-regular basis, much to the annoyance of his assistant.

This was Polsky's best episode so far, perhaps due to the fact that he wasn't working alone on it and got a little help.
Additionally this was also a very good AJ episode, good girl honesty just can't lie and say: "fuck off spike, I got nothing to do for you". You see they can make a AJ episode focusing on a different character trait.

Yes Spike being a klutz and completely incompetent at household stuff was quite off putting and strange, since he works in the library and yes this wasn't the most original pony story, but not every episode can be a "sleepless in ponyville" one. The predictability of the plot is a non issue for me, because you can predict most of the plot and how the episode is going to end sometimes just by the name of the episode: "Spike at your service", just says a lot…
The David vs. Goliath ending was okay and the timberwolves didn't bother me at all. All those loose stuff that moves on it's own would have been a pain to animate.

What this episode does best is playing with the characters of all the mane 6. There were a couple of awesome gags that had me grinning most of the time, I just had a lot of fun watching this episode.

Not really, no. There have been much longer droughts. This is a bit different, because we know we're mid-season. But there are several other things I can do. Like sleep. Rewatch episodes. Play video games. Job hunt. Contact and catch up with friends. Catch up on other television series. Watch movies.

There are things to do.

But if you really want to satisfy your pony jones, then I'd suggest picking a tag with a lot of images and having fun on Derpibooru. Perhaps go to lesser known sites like Twentypercentcooler and see if they have images that other sites don't have.

Seriously, are we still on about that? Wonderbolt Academy is a bad episode, one of the poorest in the show, and they should have stuck with the other ending. Agree or disagree, but I don’t see what it has to do with your or anyone else’s opinion of the new episode.

This wasn't really aimed at people in this thread (seeing as most of you are looking at this episode with a critical eye). My point for bringing up Wonderbolts Academy was that I was seeing people love some episodes with a ton of flaws (like this one) while absolutely hating other episodes that I didn't see many (emphasis on many) flaws in (like Wonderbolts Academy). It just bugs me that people will pick apart some episodes to pieces and act like it has no redeeming qualities while turning around to an episode like this week's and forgive almost any flaw it has. I'm sorry, but that just doesn't sit well with me. But whatever, it's just a show and people are entitled to their (somewhat inconsistent) opinions.

I liked the latest episode. The plot was boring, but the jokes in it made me laugh. I think I would've liked it more if the timberwolves weren't in 3D. "The Wonderbolts Academy" was not a great episode. I think it was just meh. It's not the worst of the season. That title goes to "The Crystal Empire." Good Lord, after all this time I still hate that episode.

My reaction to the ending of "May The Best Pet Win":

But hey, you know I don't really hate those episodes. I dislike a number of aspects about them, but all have their own entertainment value. And at the end of the day, FIM at its worst is still better than most shows out there.

Just saw the episode. Loved it. A lot. I was laughing a ton, found a lot of the interactions cute, and didn't think anybody was too out of character at any point. Of course, maybe I'm just in an agreeable mood or something.

I'll admit that I enjoy Spike's character more than I assume most of you do. Because… he… reminds me of someone.

Anyways, I enjoyed it. Simple as that. I do agree that it was predictable, but then again, so are most of the episodes. My mom has predicted, with almost 100% accuracy, the entire plot of almost every single episode. She's read a lot of things in her time, so she knows how it goes.

I said it was funny already, but I want to put emphasis on that because it was a major point of why I enjoyed the episode, and the show in general. I disliked Wonderbolt Academy because it wasn't funny at all, focusing more on the action-y scenes that I personally hate. Whereas this episode had a ton more humor (Pinkie Pie technically could be humor in WA, but she was too over-the-top for me). In my book, if it makes me laugh a lot when I'm looking to laugh a lot, then it's good. I have Legend of Korra and video games for action.
