Oh god, I was so bored at school that I drew this sketch up:

Before you ask, yes, it's another Jojo reference. :P

Is anyone else getting somewhat bothered by the fact that a lot of people are assuming that the guy that Twilight hugged in the trailer is supposed to be a love interest, and going into rants and rages about how Twilight doesn't need a boyfriend? It really bothers me because people are assuming love interest status just because of one hug in the trailer. It's like Lyra and Bon Bon all over again. Or, to put a more recent example, the assumption that the super secret could-not-be-recorded panel at EQLA was about spoilers for EQG or season 4.

I guess it's just a pet peeve I have for this fandom that we tend to take the smallest things, make up crazy explanations for it, and then run with it as if it's canon.

Also, for whatever place she was transported, WHY IS NORMAL TO HAVE PURPLE SKIN?! And her "human" friends are too similar to the pony friends…

The world where she was teleported to is a parallel universe, where instead of ponies, humans with coloful skin are the dominant race, and Twi is the only one that had no human counterpart.

You know, that's actually the first thing I thought of when I saw the skin colors of the character designs. I didn't like Doug back when it was on though so it's kind of a hit against EG in my view.

Yeah, I don't really know what to say about it. Kinda a split opinion if you want.

First, the artstyle. Ok, given, it was better than the initial terribad spoilers we were shown. It's decently animated. They ditched some of the bad ideas. So overall it's a better result.

I am not a fan of the human high school scenario. There, said it. Sure, it looks better than intially expected. But we have to face here that this is not My Little Pony. This isn't the everyday lives of ponies in a pony world, this is a high school teen smoochy friendship story (the trailer bgm did not help this case). I was never really a fan of those types of highschool settings.

Not saying with that that it'll suck, but my past experience with these types of things isn't directly positive. I also simply lacks some of the things that made us like My Little Pony. Of course I'll stay a wait a see person like before, so no conclusions will be drawn yet. Like you all said, what's the worst that can happen?

I see what you're saying and absolutely agree on the 'wait and see' attitude, but the love interest implications do admittedly go a bit beyond 'just one hug.'
The high school setting, the corny 'teen bop' music, the clumsy girl accidentally bumping into the hot guy who is also really nice: Really, it all feeds into what people have been fearing about EG from the beginning, a horribly cliched storyline filled with the endless tropes of teen drama.

Now, considering how the original MLP:FIM unexpectedly subverted a lot of the tropes of a standard children's show there is certainly still hope, but I can't really blame people too harshly for being nervous about it.
(Not condoning the insane rant people though, Those are always annoying and dumb, even in the cases where they happen to be right in some ways.)

Now, I actually want to take a stab at connecting the disparate pieces of information that we have into an outline of a coherent story… Let's see how this goes.

So, we have been told that somepony stole Twilight's crown and that the apparent antagonist of the movie looks a lot like that Sunset Shimmer toy from a while back.

If you recall the description on the toy (that caused drama itself), Sunset was a former student of Celestia, though her absence in the show so far implies that she no longer is.
What if the plot essentially hinges on that kind of conflict?
Sunset had been learning from Celestia in the past, but Twilight swooped in as a tiny filly and quickly surpassed the abilities of ponies twice her age.
Then the little upstart goes off and becomes a freaking princess!
What about all of Sunset's work?! Does it count for nothing?! Why isn't she a princess?!
Commence revenge.
Sunset steals Twilight's crown as both a symbolic and literal (her crown does contain the Element of Magic, you know) power grab and runs off to another world.
This doesn't explain why Sunset seems to be pretty at-home in that high school, but there could be some explanation for that by saying that either Sunset has also been effected by the same thing that keeps everyone else from remembering their pony forms or, maybe more likely, Sunset is just playing along while she figures out what she can and can't do in her new form.

As for this guy:

If that really is his pony form there, I could see him as a special royal guard who has been sent through the mirror along with Twilight, or maybe he's just her personal bodyguard who also has a human form just like all of her friends.
That would allow an explanation of his closeness to Twilight without needing it to necessarily have any romantic lines (though I still think the trailer was implying stuff).

So yeah, that's my running theory on the story at this point.
Vengeful former student, angry at the success of a younger prodigy, attempts to sabotage her rival (a rival who, ironically, doesn't even know that she exists).
It really isn't that unique or great of an idea and it could easily be wildly off-base, but i think it's decent enough while still incorporating all the details that we do know to this point.
Here's hoping they pull this off well.

Really though, there can be only one appropriate ending to all of this:

Couple that with Twilight stealing a line from Rarity and we're all good.

I agree with you on most points, but I think the reactionaries might have won this battle.

Who is the only male character we've see? "Brad"
What is the primary focus of the plot? Stolen crown No, it's probably just high school.
What do most teen girl-focused shows set in high school use for plot? Friends, betrayal, and boyfriends.

I really don't care either way. I'm not going to complain about it, so long as Hasbro doesn't decide to crash their IPs and get peanut butter in my chocolate human in my pony.

I'm not going to call this a bad move by Hasbro, though. It's certainly a money-grab, but not for the reasons most people believe, I think. It's been almost three years since MLP:FiM made its debut, and the target audience has grown up a little. Every kid's show loses fans as those fans get older, and Hasbro is trying to keep them around. Using characters they already know and love is an easy way to keep those fans entertained.

IMO, whether EQG is good or not rests on Shimmer. The high school plot's going to be painful to watch and will only be bearable by adorkable Twilight. Every time the pseudo-Mane Six show up, my Suspension of Disbelief is going to snap in half as I wonder why they exist at all instead of simply sending the Mane Six through the ad hoc portal, so any "character development" from them will be moot. Neither of those plots will be able to make this good.

Shimmer is the only thing that can make this thing workable. She's gonna need some kick ass motives and plans. Her personality needs to be more than a stereotypical alpha bitch. This can't be a "I stole your crown out of spite" plan, cause that's not only a stupid plan, but it causes the whole plot to implode in on itself.

TL;DR: If Shimmer sucks as a villain, there will be no hope for Equestria Girls.

So I have a question about Equestria Girls. Will Spike be able to talk as a dog? I can kinda understand why Spike was made a dog after seeing the trailer. It kinda makes more sense to have him as a dog that can somehow be brought to high school with Twilight rather than say a 5 year old boy. Still has unfortunate implications, but I think I can bring at least a little logic. My main opinion on the Spike dog is if he can actually talk. I think I'll be sorely disappointed to learn he can't.

This is why I never invest in ONE ship… This is why my ships are such a cluster of ponies just randomly showing affection to one another in whatever way feels comfortable until something sticks.

Because, A) Eventually canon is going to screw you over. B) Try enough things and you MAY be right, though things can still blind side you like this. C) Screw Monogamy. And D) Its easy to write flings, but very difficult to write something substantial; So writing 500 different pairings of one character in the same story for at least mild attraction enough for a fling is remarkably more easy than making one pairing be strong enough to carry a plot on its own.

In otherwords… How can this ONE guy going on a date with Twilight ruin my shipping… When my shipping already amounts to… And works best as… This?:

Then again… Nobody seems to take the Harem route seriously as a viable shipping option nowadays do they? No wonder I get ignored every-time I bring this up.

Edit: To put things in the whole Ship Metaphor… Why invest in a flimsy little rowboat that can be sunk with one good knock, when you can invest in a cruise ship for thousands that you need a giant iceberg to sink? Which may not even sink it mind you, since modern ships should be able to withstand Icebergs now… With a little dent repair back in port.

Just posting my random thoughts here:

I just realized that the ponies do indeed eat eggs, as per evidence from the Sisterhooves Social episode. One thing I forgot that only eggs that weren't fertilized do not contain an embryo (idk, does it still?), so now I realize it's perfectly fine. Unfortunately, who knows which eggs contain an embryo? Honestly, would that make the ponies in My Little Pony omnivores?

Well… They're still Vegetarian… But I guess they're not Vegan.

They are mammals after all. Just about every mammal drinks milk from its mom.

Of course, Humans took a couple of thousand years to adapt to Cow and Goat milk. So… Ponies must have spent quite some time adapting to the Milk and Eggs thing in the past as well.

Come to think of it… Isn't Egg White and Yolk pretty much just the equivalent of Milk with Protein shakes… But for developing Birds?

…And as for the question of Telling which eggs are fertilized or not, just remember that Egg Farmers normally keep the Rooster away from the Hens so they don't get fertilized.

I never understood why people lose their minds whenever the suggestion is made that ponies eat meat. They talk, are occasionally bipadal, and do many other things real ponies can't. So, why can't they eat meat? Besides, they already do:

But that's tofu! Why would they shape it like meat, color it like meat, and turn it into a meat substitute, if they didn't eat meat? It makes no sense.
