Well, today they revealed Sonic and Knuckles's designs for the show.

Personally, it's not terrible and at least it puts my worst fears at rest. Sure there are some redesigns, but what's important is they still kept the features that makes us look at them and say "That's Sonic!" And I think that's what's most important.
