Cringeworthy Cleanup

While I personally love being able to browse though every new image that come to the site, it would seem more and more 'cringeworthy' images are being added to that particular article, and thus to the 'all images' page of the site. At first, I didn't pay much attention to it, and I thought it was a good time for the article to pop up. But, since then, the number of images added to the article seems to increase everyday, and I'm beginning to get a little irritable with scrolling though them to view all other images added.

It's even worse when it's a 'NSFW' cringeworthy post, and hellish when I'm going though a NSFW block from something else. EG;
"Gee, I really like all this lewd ecchi from kill la kill, I'm glad I'm able to see such tasteful near-nud – OH DEAR GOD MY F*CKING EYES."
While it is my fault for not paying attention to the little pop-up bar that tells you what article it's attached to when you hover the mouse on it, it seems a bit of a stretch when it's the most vile, nasty piece of 'porn' I've ever laid my dear eyes upon. Then again, maybe I came across those images before the mods cleaned them out.

We have a button on the 'all images' page that blocks all 'my little pony' article images from the image list, and though I don't use it it's one hell of a good addition to the site, is it possible to perhaps do something similar with the cringeworthy article?

I'll agree that the Cringeworthy gallery is problematic, it's a matter us mods have been discussing for a while now. The thing about the Cringeworthy gallery is that it's contents is purely subjective, what's cringeworthy to one person isn't crindgeworthy to someone else. The gallery is turning into little more than 'post things I don't like', mostly consisting of ponies, bad fanart and (somewhat) misused memes. It's become the battlegrounds for people to bash whatever they hate, even if it's not inherently cringeworthy to most people (i.e. posting a picture of an Xbox One or PS4). To be honest, I would have no qualms with just straight up locking the gallery.
However, the problem that faces us then is the fact that the cringeworthy gallery is one of the most popular image galleries, people do enjoy searching through the gallery. Do we have a right to stop what other people enjoy? It's similar to when we were first implementing the spoiler tags, many mods were against the idea due to the fact that, like with the cringeworthy gallery, there is no way to determine what a spoiler is. However it was a feature that the vast majority of the userbase requested, so it was implemented, with an emphasis on letting the users determine what constituted as a spoiler or not (the implementation of scrapbookers makes this easier). We are thinking that we may eventually have to come up with some guidelines for what constitutes as a spoiler, but for now at least, that's the arrangement.
So here's what we can do, we could:
a) leave the gallery open, and let the userbase decide what constitutes as cringeworthy or not
b) have the admins create a set of guidelines for what can and cannot be submitted as cringeworthy
c) Lock the gallery, prohibiting further use of the gallery. Strict, but gets the job done.
Personally, I'm leaning towards b or c in this case, but lets see what you guys agree with. I believe that this is a matter we should have everyone agree on, considering there's such a divide about it.

I have an idea how we can prevent the abuse of uploading pics of shows someone doesn't like.
One of the guidelines should be about only uploading shows, films and other media that have proof to show that it's really bad. For example, if I were to upload an image that represents a bad show, I would probably provide a link to imdb or Rotten Tomatos to show that it was panned by critics and/or audience. Or for any other website that shows pure proof that it is universally hated.

I saw the cringeworthy entry, cringeworthy is fails that involve feelings of awkwardness, embarrassment and pity, but there is images on the gallery that is NOT cringeworthy,i saw a lot of images that doesn't contain awkward FAIL,I agree that there's something wrong on the cringeworthy gallery,we need to be united,I and other users vain discuss what is cringeworthy and what is NOT cringeworthy, then Random 21 can have the admins create a set of guidelines for what can and cannot be submitted as cringeworthy as he said on the post and tigrischao can lock the gallery prohibiting further use of the gallery(but only if the gallery still being problematic)someone agree?

Things so bad they're good are their own thing, always have been.

"Strange artwork" normally gets interpreted as BAD eye-bleeder work. People usually forget the NSFW rule as well. Speaking of which, with all the 'examples' put into the internet paraphernalia article (As opposed to all that makes /d/ awesome for most people, they post western 'art' of the same 3 'fetishes' even though there are way too many examples already), we may need to do a huge purge at some point for that too.

I can see why the 'things you hate' thing began though. For example, posting a site banner, like Ctrl+alt+del, was supposed to generalize the horrible sensation of being forced to read it. This and other posts like it eventually became a bad example for future posts, and the whole article and supplying userbase seems to have formed a miniature sub-culture around it.

And that sub-culture has formed another issue: people are upvoting pictures based on how cringeworthy it is and downvoting if it's not, and not on how well it adds as an example or if it breaks the rules. I can only assume that most rulebreaking posts get mod attention once it gets enough downvotes, but that's just not happening here.

Hell, maybe putting a temporary lock is the right course of action until we can get a better consensus on this.

the cringeworthy gallery is for awkward, embarrassing, and pity FAILs because the cringeworthy entry says that "Cringeworthy," an eponym of the words “cringe” and “worthy,” is an Internet slang term used to describe a wide range of social media blunders and FAILs that may evoke feelings of awkwardness, embarrassment or even pity"then the people need to post awkward, embarrassing and pity FAILs,and NOT things that they hate

Friendly reminder that there's a FAIL entry.

People seem to think the Cringeworthy gallery applies to both at times, same with people who upload Tony Kornheiser related images to the Expand Dong entry.

While I want to push more for another 'block button' like the one for MLP images, I realize we also have alot of people posting images of the same subject matter, and other people going "Well, if it's being posted this much, I BETTER MAKE IT A MEME HURR DURR" And then we get those same awful images re-posted again at greater intensity, to another 'article' besides cringeworthy. Perhaps we should post the main rules to enforce on the upload page, plus something like : "Just because you see it posted alot here, doesn't make it a meme elsewhere. If you feel like something that falls under the category of 'cringeworthy' DOES qualify, please put the topic in the forums so you may get a second opinion first."

It feels like this is getting worse every day. And if it begins to spread to other articles at an even faster rate, then I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

The cringeworthy gallery is indefinitely locked. We might change our minds on it, we might not, but consider it permanent. Of course, the gore and personal attacks are still against site rules, and we aren't stupid, so leaving them unlisted will still lead to consequences.

Locking.

Pardon me Twilit, hope you don't mind me opening this back up again.

While the cringeworthy gallery is now locked, I believe that doesn't quite close all discussion on the gallery just yet

I've brought up another subject on the article about doing some clean-up of the gallery and removing the offending images that caused the downfall of the gallery

The idea is to take out the trash so people have a chance to see what really belongs in the gallery. Of course what counts as cringeworthy is all subjective and we cannot say for sure what counts and what doesn't.

But we can probably agree that things such as:

…do not belong there. This can apply to many other images galleries as well

Somehow we need to make it clear that this is the content we don't really need to see. That may require more revision of the guidelines but that's another topic.

In the meantime, if we do intend to fix this broken gallery, it might be good to have a moment to consider parameters of acceptableness and gets some hands on deck to go through it all. Since I have image deleting powers, I'm willing to do part of this cleanup myself…or we can just leave it

I vote for cleaning the gallery, but i'm afraid that some users may abuse of the gallery again. I think the gallery shouldn't be unblocked now, maybe in the future but not now.

Scrapbookers can help in the cleaning by adding a specific tag (like "Not Cringeworthy") so you don't have to go trough the whole gallery.

^ The only problem with having a tag like that is because of what people perceive as Cringeworthy. I uploaded a picture of a tasteless drawing involving Anne Frank being sexualized. Perfectly Cringeworthy, right? According to Scrapbooker, that wasn't the case – and said Scrapbooker got rid of a bunch of meta-information that I wrote for the picture, claiming that it wasn't Cringeworthy because it was shock value. Shock value or not, it's still discomforting, and it still counts. If it's something in violation of BSOD's "Big Five", it should be tagged, but don't bring your own judgments into the picture just because you don't agree with something.

Make no doubt, the gallery won't be unlocked anytime soon. It will stay locked for a while until we have easier ways to moderate the content that is going in there. But while no new images can come in, we can still take images out so this is opportunity for clean-up. I just want to make sure we all agree on what needs taken out.

What is cringe? What belongs in that galley? For my point of view I quote myself here:

Real cringe is painful, disgusting and/or embarrassing to look at. it leaves you feeling incredibly sorry for those involved. A good example of something that belongs is this. That is cringe. You look at it and feel that sick feeling in your stomach

But consider Kung Fu's point: I think we should stay away from the images where the cringeworthy could be debated. People have different thresholds for what makes them cringe so we should not be removing images based on whether or not they make us cringe on a personal level. EG: I see a lot of fetish images which don't make me cringe, but that could be because I'm debauched. They could easily be cringe for others so I'd leave those images alone.

Instead we should focus only on what is obviously not cringe and get rid of the content that leaves no question that it doesn't belong. As you can see I already listed the types of offending imagery that got the gallery locked. Those would be a start

If we stick to an agreed list of criteria for offending content, then yes we can just have someone go through the gallery and flag the images that meet this criteria, then a mod can review those flagged images and delete them

Whatever guidelines we set up here on what counts as an offending image, can be used to help the other galleries that have been mentioned as a problem area

Then later we can discuss rules a little more. Rule 2 of the site is pretty clear: Keep it relevant. But some of the comments we got indicated that people were still not aware of the rules and how they applied to the image galleries. With this lack of understanding of the rules, it seems that some image galleries are inventing their own rules:

  • Cringeworthy made it's own rule where anything unlikeable belonged there
  • Reaction Faces made it's own rule where it's the dumping ground for all miscellanous gifs
  • Porns dumps somehow became acceptable in the Furry gallery
  • MLP made it's own rule where Meta-images, soapboxes and other non-imagery are relevant

Maybe stating "relevant information only" isn't quite enough and we need to provide examples of what relevant means.

That's Chaos Theory for you baby.

Jokes aside.

So, for now we focus on those images that doesn't belong in the gallery. Got it.

I think we should work on the guidelines right away.

While I'm glad the issue is getting a solution, we're starting to see a dam effect in other places, I'm afraid. Whomever was spamming the 'internet paraphillia' images with 'inflation' is at it again, and I'm not sure if it's related, but my gut's telling me this is going to get a little worse before this gets better.

Just wait out the oversaturation period. Many memes have oversaturation periods where the image gallery gets flooded with entries (especially advice animals).

I would suggest that a set of generally agreed upon set guidelines between both mods and public be posted to determine what is definable as cringe worthy and what might be listed as under FAIL, ect. Also any uploaded pictures would have to be seen and approved by one of the mods to make sure said picture is in compliance with the rules before they could be viewed in the public display. if a picture is not approved by one mod, two other mods should have a look and determine their opinion if the picture would belong in that particular gallery and a majority vote should determine whether the image can be uploaded or not. Im not sure if these things may work due to not having a good idea on how much man and server power a system of this degree would be. just thought id leave a few suggestions

Mildly appropriate picture I found as a comment on one of the pictures you posted.

You should unlock this gallery again. There were just a few people who ruined it for everyone. Wouldn't it be easier to just take a user to a noticeboard which tells what belongs here and what not?

@evilthing

Changes to the way the site works takes resources that must be spent carefully. We'd only do that if we're sure it will work. But somehow I don't think people can be trusted to heed something like that

Okay guys do we agree on removing these types of images?

Politics (I isagree, therefore cringe)
Hatedoms (I dislike, therefore cringe)
Meta images (I comment on the cringe gallery itself, therefore cringe)
Internal joke references (this references cringe, therefore cringe)
And just plain stupid shit

Since I'm getting no more feedback on these, I'll assume these are our targets and focus on just them

Last edited Jan 08, 2014 at 07:17PM EST

@Evilthing

Uh no. The subject of research is the very term 'cringeworthy' and what that entails. 'Embarrassing things we say and do' is not a meme.

Assuming that the gallery was a collection ground for anything "embarrassing" is what caused this mess in the first place. We only want to see things that are relevant to Cringeworthy

@On the subject of a filter button

I don't think the cringe gallery is large enough to warrant its own filter.

We added the less ponies button because ponies turn up in just about every search result. An entry has to get that huge before we start pooling such resources into it

Besides, rather than a "less cringe" button next to the "less pony" button, I'd rather see just a whole new filtering system all together based on your user preferences where you get to select more than one of any subject to be hidden from you.

But that's a large complex feature that will take time.

What about shipping pictures that have actual good art?
Should we take them out and just put them in the shipping gallery?
Or should we create an entry for crack pairings, if the shipping pics are just too ridiculous?
(i.e Shrek x Shadow)

MrMcNuggets wrote:

What if we make all the images posted on Cringeworthy pass through moderation first?

That's a good idea on paper, but it'd be pretty hard to keep up with. On a typical day, upwards of twenty images would be uploaded – which translates to a lot of stuff for one moderator to keep up with.

I think it might be plausible to have a "Cringeworthy General" thread for the forums for users to irk at, but it could be just as susceptible to abuse.

I suppose negative karma can hide bad images unlike the gallery.

@RobotJoe

Okay the crack pairings and shippings might just get left alone. Since that stuff is pretty debateable when it comes to cringe.

Personally I don't think shipping counts. Shipping rarely ever makes me cringe, even when it's Shrek and Shadow. To me, it's all just nature.

But I'm overexposed to R34 so shipping never phases me. Maybe you guys genuinely do cringe at shipping. I have no way of knowing. I think the best idea is to just leave anything I'm not sure about.

Then again, if we are allowed to post one crack pairing and call it cringe, do we go and upload the entire collection of porn to the internet then? When it comes to porn/shipping, there's something for everybody and for every single sex position and pairing, there's going to be somebody cringing at it. By this logic, all porn belongs in cringeworthy

Uploading shipping to the cringeworthy gallery is like uploading normal cat photo's instead of lolcats to the cat gallery. Yes it's cats but it's stretching the subject too broad.

I digress. Point is, I'm just going to sit on that one for now.

@MrMcnuggest

I'm going to copypaste what I said to another poster that gave that same suggestion:

No. We don’t do image screening. That is far, far too much work. There’s more logistics, manpower and resources involved in that than you think.

If I have to sit down and look at the hundreds of images uploaded each day and compare each one to a massive flow chart, then Cheezeburger better give me a fat paycheck

We’ve always relied on people using their own common sense for uploads. We’d rather be built on a system of trust and respect. Believe it or not, that’s easier for us to manage than a bloated bureaucratic process

If more people used common sense, galleries would never be locked.

[EDIT] Thanks to for all the help so far cleaning up the cringe gallery. I'm still going through Nyancats list.

Most in that list are getting removed because they are just things people don't like. Just because you don't like something does not mean their portrait belongs on cringeworthy.

Correct: Uploading cringey ponycreator OC's
Incorrect: Uploading the banner of ponycreator itself

Same goes for pretty much everything else in that list.

Some images in the list I did not touch because they could be considered cringe or because I actually cringed at them myself (Out of which there weren't many. I'd say only 2-3 images in that entire massive list made me cringe so far)

EG: I vividly cringed at the insanity wolf macro about kicking a wall with a splinter under your toenail. Needless to say, I left that one in despite being flagged. For stuff like that, I need other people to look at it and give their input if they think it counts or not

I personally think pain images are not belong to cringeworthy gallery. Here is a list for you. It is up to you to move or delete these images:

Clarifying the impossibility of individual screening – I'm looking at the front page right now, at 4 my time:

We can get away with individually screening entries because there's a small number of them every day. It's manageable, and more than likely we'll have one or more entry-enabled mods online to review them. However, 550 images is a stretch for any human being to cover daily, and that's more than likely not the end of uploads today. It's simply too difficult to screen every image that goes through here.

The easier way to deal with it is to give greater liberties to the posters, and hope that common sense will prevail and the majority of submissions will be within rules. Ideally, the image mods should be able to glance through the gallery, find a small number of infringing images, and delete those two or 3 images quickly. We've got the rules up clearly enough (although I would still like to see a disclaimer link on submit pages to site rules and NSFW guidelines) and the majority of galleries follow them well. The general rule of thumb is that we only lock galleries that will create controversy or have almost exclusively NSFW content.

Cringeworthy was an issue where there was rampant disregard of the rules, and moderation couldn't deal with messing with it every single day for a large amount of time.

Basically, it's not that we don't want to open cringeworthy ever again, it's that the people negotiating for its reopening and offering suggestions don't understand the logistics involved in their suggestions.

Maybe we could have a meta-joke gallery so there would be a proper home for Circules.

Shipping should go in the Shipping gallery. That's what it's for.

Art should not go in the Cringeworthy gallery unless it displays either:

1. Horrible technical skill (And I mean HORRIBLE like this )
2. Extremely unusual subject matter. As in, "there is no rational defense for the existence of this image" unusual.

I have a feeling that we'll need a new "category" of moderator. There will be Patrollers, users with full image editing/removing privileges for certain galleries. You can delete pics in the Cringeworthy gallery, but not in My Little Pony. Something like that. Moderators can grant "editorship" for certain users.

There's not going to be a gallery for in-jokes as moderation policy is to discourage the idea that this site can force memes like that. Just use a tag and don't add it to a gallery.

I'd rather not add additional moderation, even a bare-bones minimum position, for a problem we've had in just two galleries, especially since no other galleries have actually given us these kinds of headaches. It's the users that are the problem, and they all knew the consequences. It's not like we were quiet about them.

Side note – 3 hours later the image count is 669. This is also without cringe, which was a large recipient of submissions. You can see why this can be difficult to moderate sometimes without a problem gallery and individual screening.

@HorribleGhost

Maybe we could have a meta-joke gallery so there would be a proper home for Circules.

Even better idea: Post them in the Circules thread!

Seriously, the JFF forum is the best place on KYM for in-jokes and meta. We strictly demand relevancy in the image galleries. But on JFF we don't care what you do.

Just make a thread for each in-joke, upload your macro's without an entry, post them on the thread then go wild!

Art should not go in the Cringeworthy gallery unless it displays either:
1. Horrible technical skill (And I mean HORRIBLE like this )
2. Extremely unusual subject matter. As in, “there is no rational defense for the existence of this image” unusual.

It should be this:

1. Cringeworthy technical skill (And I mean IT MAKES ME CRINGE)
2. Extremely cringeworthy subject matter. As in, “I cringe at the existence of this image” cringeworthy.

I have a feeling that we’ll need a new “category” of moderator.

We have those, they are called image moderators. But we don't really have any assigned I don't think.

I've noticed some people who might make good image moderators if I can recommend hem

Maybe we could have a meta-joke gallery so there would be a proper home for Circules.

Maybe we can grant editorship to image galleries like how people grant editorship for articles.

Editorship is only implementable on entries right now, and it's probably not worth the time and effort to add a completely new feature for the sake of one or two galleries.

Like I said, logistics.

In a small addition to that, I wouldn't be too bothered to add some Media Moderators just because it's such a bare-bones minimum position. Basically the only power you'll be adding is removing images and moving between entries, not something to give to the masses, but trustable to a few. And let's face it, the Entry and Forum mods who got Media added later aren't always the best we could get there. Basically the main reason some of us are suddenly into removing images are because others are doing the work for us.

Some candidates who I would trust with the powers have proven themselves over the last couple of weeks, not only through these issues with Reaction Faces and Cringeworthy. But if it's mainly tagging, it's not necessary.

But outside of Cringeworthy and Reaction Faces, you can also look into the GIF gallery which has turned into a huge dump. Some of the fandom entries are suffering from the "dump everything in the main"-syndrom, in which users forget sub-entries even exist. Expand Dong and Tony Kornheiser is a common issue in which users forget the differences between the memes, another being Descartes and The D. Other main galleries who receive all the stuff which would be off much better in certain subculture or meme entries. Of course the "in-joke" creators who have gotten smarter and started making images that actually can fit in other entries. These are all examples that require moving between entries or removing, which is something only mods can do.

Issue is that a lot of this stuff is submitted to the mods through PM. Perhaps if users make more use of the Image Cleaning thread thread again, we can get a better view of which are more active outside of solely tagging, and decide after that. But this is more a mod issue, so I'm not giving names in public, and will leave details to the more private areas of discussion.

Actually, I was going to suggest a cleaning for the GIF gallery too.

The gallery has around of 1.400 pictures, which is practically nothing next to the reaction faces gallery. I think a couple of scrapbookers can handle the problem easily. In fact, I could do it all by myself but Deltamelon will rape me if I don't tell him.

Anyway, we can start by adding a simple tag (gif:not) then some mod moves/delete the images.

@The GIF gallery

Well, I did my homework and tagged a bunch of pictures. Surprise for me when I discover that the GIF gallery is not becoming a dump-whatever-gif-you-have, the gallery WAS and IS a dump.

Anyway; most of the tagged pictures belongs to the Anime gallery. The rest are fails and a couple of MLP pictures that should be eliminated, but that's not my decision. So, is up to you guys from now on.
