Searching for "%" is just going to bring up all of KYM's content ever. This is exactly what you did, and is probably more of a super weird behavioural issue than a "bug", per-se. But I digress.
The initial search tab is indicating that there are in the range of 84500 forum posts on KYM, many of which are probably hidden, in the council, or otherwise unavailable for viewing. At 16 posts per search page, this is, in fact, 52819 (now 52820) pages. So that number checks out. The issue here is that the last couple (thousand) forum posts are just hidden, yet still indexed in the search. If you were a database moderator or administrator, you would probably see all of these pages full.
The behaviour also happens with users (and if there were enough of them, editorials), but not with entries, images, and videos, which all use KYM's weird infinite scrolling en lieu of search result pages. I'm sure there's some kind of theoretical fix, but it's not really bothering anyone, is it? You're basically seeing the side-effects of korean advertising spam.

Guess it wasn't a bug after all… Thanks for clearing that up for me!
