Frequently Suggested Ideas

19 posts from 17 users

A list of ideas often brought up, and their current processing status towards being done.

General / Miscellaneous:

1. Editing Comments / Preview Comment button

Status: No official word from James, although it seems too hard to be implemented.

2. Undoing Accidental Votes

Status: Was abused heavily, and subsequently removed.

4. Comment Tab

Status: Too hard to be implemented in the current database.

5. KYM Mobile App

Status: No word from admins, although it had existed in the past. James has worked on the mobile version on the site for phone browsers.

Media:

1. Toggling Spoiler / NSFW hiding

Status: Not happening. Read more here

2. Remove / Edit "Show Fewer Ponies" button

Status: Creating a filter system would be too complex for the current database. James hasn't given word whether changing the "Show Fewer Ponies" with "Show Fewer NSFW/Spoiler/etc." would be possible.

3. Epilepsy Thumbnails / NSFL Thumbnails

Status: Needs drafted idea and user support before forwarding the idea to the admins. There is still debate whether a NSFL thumbnail is needed.

4. New Filters

No official word from James, although it seems too hard to be implemented.

5. Unlock [Cringeworthy/Ruined Childhood/Alternate Universe/Gallery Here]

Status: Galleries are locked often following repeated abuse, and aren't typically up for debate for unlocking. Do not expect locked galleries to return again unless it's stated the lock is temporary.

Entry:

1. New Entry Resource Links

Status: No word from James, however Ari said it could be possible, here. If users are in agreement, could be done.

2. Construction Section

Link

Status: No new activity since previous discussion. Ari thought it was a good idea.

Forums:

1. Removing Karma / Karma Overhaul

Status: Currently in discussion. No real general agreement in what to do.

2. New Boards

Sports board got rejected due to projected lack of activity, no new board ideas have been suggested since.

IRC:

1. Moving the IRC

Generally agreed it's an unnecessary change.

2. Specific IRC Rules

Generally agreed it's an unnecessary and disliked change.

3. Seperate IRC Rooms for Different Discussions

Still has yet to run a trial to see if multiple rooms would work. Not heavy desire from users to enforce new channels.

Add Longpost thumbnails in addition to Epilepsy/NSFL. There have been a few suggestions floating around and I think it's probably the best idea (or at least the most applicable) out of the three.

List of things that aren't going to be done:

  • Undoing any mod or admin action that occurred for user abuse. Especially gallery locks. Don't even talk about them.
  • Any change to the way images are organized, thumbnailed, or sorted.
  • Image gallery filters. Hardware limitations.
  • Any change to IRC ever. It's not important enough to put actual effort into.
  • More comment support/features.
  • Voting changes/karma removal

List of things that "might" be done:

  • Confirming old entries, and entry references

Presumably it's because of the amount of back and forth between the server and the site. It'd be too much. I mean, we're already having issues with the site cache taking forever to update – people not showing up in the editors section of an entry, for example.

It sound simple, but if just upvoting a lot makes the site nigh unusable, imagine what allowing people to edit comments would do.

i'm a little curious, how was the undo vote button abused?

People would use it to troll others to be an asshole and thus being abused.

IIRC, 3 or 4 years ago, one was able to switch their vote.
People abused of the system by changing their votes in order to troll users, the mods decided to remove the feature to prevent more problems.
I may be wrong on how it went but I know that’s the reason why it was removed and never implemented again.

Uh, hold up. The list of general suggestions… What's #3? Also, what does "NSFL" stand for?

(I would have done a partial quotation of LNH's post to just the parts I think are weird, but I don't know how.)

NSFL stands for Not Safe For Life, and is basically our equivalent of a tier above NSFW which we insta-remove.

Partial quotations can be done by either <blockquote>text </blockquote>, or by starting a line with bq. followed by a space. It's in the textile guide.

All these reasons seem to be limited by how the site was designed way back in 2008 and could be implemented if the site's structure were to be changed to allow people to do things without waiting for 8 second timers.

I'm not sure if you understand how how stupidly complex and needlessly difficult it is to "change the site's structure." You are weighing the ability to updoot posts a bit faster against rebuilding the entirety of KYM from the ground up. Even if we didn't consider how hilariously understaffed KYM is in terms of web development (hint: it's one guy ), it's pretty out there. Yes, a lot of the items on this list are limited by the underlying structure of KnowYourMeme. The same can be said of the inflexibility of the image system or why we can't make some fundamental changes that would vastly improve the system. As far as limiting factors go, having to redo the whole thing is probably a valid one.

Solution: Hire more people that can change the site's code.

Rebuilding the site's code is something I'm sure pretty everyone can get behind (at least until they get to the UI part of it) given how many great things (BBCode, booru-style tagging/filtering, thumbnail management, etc.) could be implemented, but doing that would cost a ton of money. Millions, likely, and given the financial position Cheezeburger was in before it was bought by Literally, it doesn't look like KYM makes a ton of money. Certainly not enough to warrant dumping several million dollars into it.

So as great as it would be, I doubt it's ever going to happen.

does "voting changes" mean not changing image votes? I feel like users should give a reason they downvote an image, so that they can't just click it for not thinking it's funny or not liking the user posting. the downvote button already asks "Are you sure?" but that's not gonna slow anyone down.

Can we please put in a delete option for the mail box? I'm just saying that archiving doesn't do it for me. And also a block system.

Keeping users from changing their vote on an image outright seems incredibly heavy-handed for the issue raised. For example, how would it be problematic to allow users to correct a misclick by changing their vote within 5 or 10 seconds of placing it? Am I missing something? I find it incredibly frustrating.

Besides, how did the ability to change votes even pose a problem for this site but not every other social media platform in existence?
