YouTube is unmonetizing videos for simply having controversial subject matter

Apparently, it's not just controversial topics. If there's a high amount of profanity in the video, YouTube will take action.

You think Fire Emblem Fates' localization was censorship? No sir, what YouTube is doing is censorship.

Well, I watched the video, and all I can say is… what are YT's motives for this? Are they trying to jump on the SJW bandwagon? Are they trying to make YT a more "kid-friendly" place? Bullshit. PhillyD was unmonetized for profanity? The average let's play channel curses ten times more than he does. It just seems so backwards…

This feeds into the growing conspiracy theory circulating that Google is trying to force its users to adhere to one political leaning over another. Youtube, being owned by google, pressuring people to not cover controversies that the alt right might attach to seems to only feed the conspiracy peoples arguments.

I can see no logical reason to do this, as youtube controversy involving twitter celebs fighting generate more heated comments and hateful comments, and is still getting monetized videos. So its not about cutting down on toxic youtube videos. Seems really, really, slated towards discouraging political videos.

But hey, that's just me. I think youtube is full of shit for their constant layout changes. This is just icing on the top.

And thus another depressing example of how political correctness is bringing about the decline of our civilization. Sure, the videos are still allowed to be shown, but the fact that they penalize the creator indirectly encourages the limiting of ideas and speech. The strength of our ideas and concepts not only come from how well they are supported but also from how well they hold up against differing views and opinions. Again, YouTube may not be engaging in actively suppressing views that they or their investors agree with, but they are tacitly discouraging the statement of such with this move.

YouTube is too big to fail, and they themselves know this, so the loss of revenue due to demonetizing and discouraging the creation "controversial" videos is but a small business expense if it'll push the sociopolitical agenda that they and their investors are promoting.

Can we not immediately blame this on "political correctness" when there's no strong evidence yet that it's only being used against alt-right channels? YouTube has made a number of stupid decisions in the past that have nothing to do with politics, and this could easily just be another one.

I think people here are misinterpreting "unmonetizing" as "removing videos completely". I believe this move may be an attempt to encourage people to not jump on controversial topics for the sake of making a quick buck and as a result fanning the flames. Now this could be problematic as this could cripple news and pundit channels that has to simply report this sort of thing happening.

btw 2 other notable channels this happened to are MrRepzion and Chris Ray Gun

it also happened to IDubbbz but Idubbbz managed to get it resolved by just removing innapropriate words from the descriptions and tags of the videos of his which were unmonetized

I'm starting to feel like these guys need to realize Youtube is always gonna find new ways to fuck them, stop complaining about it and actually take action.

Why can't the bigger Youtubers just come together and fund their own Youtube alternative or something? Nobody would give a fuck about Youtube if enough big names took their game somewhere else. Or what, does Youtube basically own you the second you become noteable?

I'm thinking the same thing.
I guess you could see it as a form of censorship.

Every channel I like has vulgar humor, swearing, and violence and or sexual or drug use content. Let's plays, Podcasts, Internet Series, all of the reasons I go to youtube.

So if they start driving these channels away, I'm just going to go to their websites to watch their contnet. And at that point, I will probably just remove youtube from my bookmarks.

Riff-Raff is one board down, fella.

For what unknown purpose really scares me for this. Maybe they're trying to keep their "image" like TIME and Twitter, supporting more liberal ideals. Or maybe they're just dumb. I'm still putting my bet on the former, there's too much for it to be a coincidence.

Gonna get that tinfoil hat runnin'. This can get rough

It's all a sad tale of revenge, really. People getting accused of any action being "mysoginisitc", now take to misconstruing any action as SJW in a tit for tat fashion.

I agree. I think Chris Ray Gun said it best.

Its like how people tend to look for people that are offened at things just as much as people looking for a reason to be offended.

I've seen websites make some stupid decisions before, but this? This is a full-on self-destruction. It's like Youtube is suddenly trying to transform itself into a 100% kiddy-friendly squeaky clean place, all the while pretty much removing the "you" from the whole process. Either they've just lost their fucking minds, or they've decided that they want to be a completely different service for… some reason.
And yes, a whole lot of anti-feminist/social justice Youtubers/topics are being affected, but it's nowhere near exclusive. For example…

This is why monopolies are a bad idea. Especially ones in places essential to Networking.

Two paths lie before the users. They can choose to undertake the gargantuan task of making another site to compete with Youtube, perhaps several in specific niches (Like Twitch for gaming) or they can revolt against Youtube and hope that they can change their opinion.

On the other hand apparently these rules are in place for the last few years without incident, but might be worse as it implies a direct motive to the demonetization that happened recently

I don't get it. Advertisers don't mind being advertised on TV-MA shows and R rated films so why on Youtube?
Is it just because it's not actors and real people? The whole point of Youtube was that you could speak about adult subjects and say controversial matters and not be politically correct. Someone stated that there should be a new website like Youtube that has little to no rules except for getting rid of stuff like child porn and bestiality.

They can choose to undertake the gargantuan task of making another site to compete with Youtube

In order to do that, they need to

Step 1.) get a lot of money from somewhere, probably donations, make the site, get advertisers to agree to make a system similar to Youtube so content creators and the site can make money.

then

Step 2.) convince the thousands of people whose entire livelihood depends on the money from their videos to, at once, move to the new site and then pray to god that nearly 100% of their viewers move with them so they can continue without losing money to pay their bills.

Step 1 is a colossal task, Step 2 is impossible. Youtube has content creators by the balls and they know it, which is why they are doing all this shit because they know everyone is stuck on this site.

Fucking video games as well? I thought it was just on stuff like politics and about death and terrorism that's not allowed. Not why a game is good. What are they going to do about IGN's videos? Youtube is making a huge mistake here.

Well done YouTube. You managed to make me hate you even more.

Apparently tags are cause of this? Can anyone verify that the videos mentioned here (Tanner's, Phillip's, etc) have the "Wrong" tags?

Each one of these new "policies" that Youtube enacts is only adding another nail into their own coffin. If they don't make some sort of 180 degree turn with the direction they're going, people will go to somewhere else.
I've even heard some talk that people would rather upload normal stuff to Pornhub of all places.

Well the 2nd one is more possible now. Because if these creators already had their monetization removed they have nothing to lose if their livelihood is already ruined. Youtube basically threw like 100 tons of straws onto the already crippled camel with this move. It might not be enough to kill them but something big will happen.

Like this is absolutely disgusting honestly. Seeing the screenshot of a sonic adventure 2 review being unmonetized is probably one of the most cringey things I've seen in recent memory this is straight up evil. Monopolies are fucking trash.

I love how, even in the face of loads of evidence that left-leaning and even non-political channels are being demonetized, the alt-right still insists on making this about themselves. Even though they're a small part of a larger issue, they're the somehow the primary victims.

And I thought it was the SJWs who had a victim complex…

God damn liberals! Better dead than red.

God the Youtube comment section is either complete cancer or a complete circlejerk. It's funny because SJW's aren't liberals. They're the Regressive Left or alt-left. The commentators sound like Hrom right now.

From hiding search results pertaining to Hillary Clinton's health issues to this nonsense, I think Google really is trying to kill itself.

So I have a question. Do you think this was an attempt at damage control due ot the WTFU thing a while back (I.e. is it them trying to be more transparent)?

Warning: Opposing viewpoint below

I think the main thing to take away from this video is that unlike on tv, advertisers can't choose which videos they want to advertise on. A charity like Medicines Sans Frontiers wouldn't want to have one of their ads pop up on an openly racist video (this is just an example but you get the idea), and the best way to ensure that doesn't happen is to simply not run ads on said video.

Defranco, he even stopped replying to comments.

Whether or not people agree with him in the comments isn't relevant to whether or not he's right. Of course he's going to get hate for bashing Defranco a channel with almost ten times as many followers as his own. People are simply going to defend the youtuber they like more, regardless of whether or not Buckley is actually correct.

As for the comments, I'm pretty sure the reason he stopped replying is because he needs to work on other videos, not because he was getting backlash. The man is no stranger to hate after all.
