About

我姓石 ("My Name Is Shi") is a song by Chinese artist GUXI that became the subject of a dance trend on TikTok in August 2023 called the Wo Xing Shi Trend. The trend generally features one person saying the title line, followed by another person dancing behind them to their right. The first person repeats the lyric and the second person moves to their left and resumes dancing by swaying their hips from side to side while placing their hands on their head.

Origin

On May 6th, 2022, Chinese recording artist GUXI posted "我姓石 (My Name Is Shi)"[1] to YouTube, gaining over 35,000 views in over a year (shown below).

On August 1st, 2023, the TikTok account @zzq12037nf6[2] then posted the tune to TikTok along with a video showing various babies. The video gained over 449,000 likes in one month (shown below).

Wo Xing Shi Trend

The dance trend appears to have started in Russia beginning on August 19th, 2023. That day, TikToker @cxkurumka[3] posted a video in which one man says the title lyric while his friend dances behind him, gaining over 1.5 million likes in three weeks (shown below).

Lyrics

According to TikToker Altmegz,[1] the lyrics to the song are completely nonsensical. A TikTok she posted on September 3rd in which she translated the lyrics demonstrates this (shown below).

@altmegz translating the viral douyin 'wo xing shi' audio into english / thai for y'all bc this song has TAKEN OVER MY ✨ENTIRE✨ FYP. Enjoy 😉 #douyin #woxingshi #woshingshi #chinesetiktok #viralaudio #languagelearning #我姓石 ♬ 原聲 – yyt12

Spread

The dance trend then spread following TikToker @cxkurumka's initial post on August 19th, 2023. The next day, TikToker @veryymyr posted a similar TikTok that gained over 2.2 million likes in the same timeframe (shown below).
