Overview

"The Bells" is the fifth episode of the eight season of epic fantasy TV series Game of Thrones and penultimate episode of the show. The episode follows "The Last of the Starks".

Background

On May 12th, 2019, episode five "The Bells" of season eight of HBO-produced epic fantasy series Game of Thrones premiered.[1]

Online Reactions

Online, the episode received mixed reaction from the fans, mainly due to dissatisfaction with how the plotlines of characters Jamie Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen were handled, while the scene of the duel between brothers Sandor and Gregor Clegane, commonly referred to as Cleganebowl, received praise.[2][3]

In S1E1, Jaime Lannister pushes Bran Stark out of a window. This is subtle foreshadowing for S8E5, where eight seasons of Jaime's character development are similarly thrown out the window. Thank you, Sandor, for being one of the best-written characters and for being one of the only bright spots of this episode. Long live the Hound! 1 Shes nofherfather, and she's not insane, and shes not a sadist. So that was a fücking lie.

In multiple posts, the Game of Thrones writer duo David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, commonly referred to as D&D, were criticized due to quality of writing in the episode and in season eight of the show in general.[4]

The Mad Queen

The Mad Queen refers to the progression of character Queen Daenerys Targaryen from just but strict ruler to a Machiavellian, revenge-bent tyrant willing to sacrifice innocents. In "The Bells", the moment of Daenerys's ultimate transition is shown when the character refuses to cease the attack following the capitulation of King's Landing.

Following the premiere of the episode, multiple posts questioning the rushed progression of the character, as well as memes, appeared online on Twitter, Reddit and other platforms.

Cleganebowl Resolution

Cleaganebowl is a fan theory that predicted fight between brothers Sandor Clegane and Gregor Clegane (Sir Robert Strong) originating from 4chan. In the episode, the brothers were pitted against each other in the Red Keep, with the sword and fist combat resulting in them both plummeting off the tower into flames engulfing the lower grounds, presumably leading to their deaths.

Following the release of the episode, memes and fan art based on the scene were posted online on Reddit, Twitter and other platforms (examples shown below).

Watching people getting so exasperated at GOT's situation right now is oddly fun to watch, maybe it's cause whenever a show ended poorly or in a lackluster fashion (Adventure Time, Samurai Jack) it was always a niche audience, but since GOT is so mainstream, even casual viewers who don't care about stuff like themes, narrative or even acting performance are fed up with how shit their showhas become.

To me, the best case scenario, this is funny as hell to watch a show as overhyped as the greatest thing in the world die a slow and inglorious death, in a worst case, I'm just a bastard who's enjoying seeing other people be misserable.
