About

Adult Swim [AS] TikTok Commercial Parodies refers to a series of videos on TikTok set to the original sound "VANO 3000," parodying the absurd style of original Adult Swim commercial ad bumps. The trend began in late May 2021, spreading over the course of June.

Origin

The television network Adult Swim is known for employing an absurd style in their commercial bumps, often coupling text, images and video clips that have seemingly little in common for comedic effect (examples shown below). Every ad features the stylized "[Adult Swim]" or "[AS]" logo.

On May 23rd, 2021, TikToker[1][2] and music producer VANO 3000 posted a video of himself eating set to an original beat titled "Running Away,"[7] garnering over 2.3 million views in two weeks (shown below, left). On May 24th, he posted another video set to the beat. In the video, VANO follows a man dressed as Spider-Man who tells him to stop filming, followed by the "[adult swim]" logo coming onto screen, somewhat resembling an Adult Swim commercial (shown below, right). The video gained over 43,000 views in the same span of time.

Spread

The original sound[3] was used over 109,000 times over the course of two weeks, with many TikTokers making their own Adult Swim commercial parodies set to it. The trend hit a peak in popularity in early June. For example, on June 5th, 2021, TikTokers[5][6] @aaaieecoe and @okyanger posted videos following the trend, becoming the two most popular examples in two days with over 19.1 and 8.5 million views respectively (shown below, left and right).
