About

Ah, Eto… Bleh ("Ah, well… bleh" in English) is a line of dialogue spoken by Yoriko Nikaido in a scene from the anime series You're Under Arrest! (Taiho Shichazuo). In the scene, Yoriko is confronted for a wrongdoing and attempts to excuse her actions by making a cute pose. In September 2022, the scene began seeing use as a reaction in video and GIF caption memes in which people paired the clip with captions describing heinous crimes.

Origin

The original scene comes from episode three of the You're Under Arrest OVA,[1] which aired on May 25th, 1995.[2] It has been shared online several times prior to becoming a meme. On January 9th, 2022, Twitter user @slammo12 posted the video, gaining over 450 retweets and 2,300 likes in nine months (shown below).

On September 5th, 2022, Twitter user @FullMetalWeeb posted the clip with the caption "Hitting this pose after I accidentally run over a family of 5," gaining over 9,300 retweets and 67,000 likes in two weeks while serving as the earliest known memetic usage (shown below).

Spread

Over the following weeks, the video began seeing more usage as a reaction. On September 7th, 2022, Twitter user @KhmerRougeSissy posted the scene with the caption, "Me to the police after they raid my basement and find a bunch of enslaved dwarves manufacturing estrogen," gaining six retweets and 42 likes in two weeks (shown below, top). Some high engagement examples include a September 19th tweet by Twitter user @Xavier8948 about the Grand Theft Auto VI Leak that gained over 4,100 retweets and 40,000 likes in three days (shown below, bottom)

On September 22nd, Twitter user @dot_aif posted a parody that placed Yoriko in the world of Elder Scrolls, gaining over 16,000 retweets and 72,000 likes in one day (shown below).

Others posted art of other characters as Yoriko making the "Bleh" pose. For example, on September 22nd, Twitter user @Just_Dreamo[3] posted art of Power from Chainsaw Man doing the pose, gaining over 2,200 retweets and 12,000 likes in one day (shown below, left). The same day, @MenasLG[4] posted art of Queen Marika from Elden Ring in the pose, gaining over 2,600 retweets and 20,000 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
