Origin

On December 1st, 2025, X^[1] user @triedkiss posted artwork showing profile views of their original characters embedded in an apple core in a post that is often credited as starting the trend in 2025. The tweet was captioned, "two bites from the same rotten apple," and gathered over 400,000 views and 18,000 likes in seven months.

Other internet users credit the Chinese social networking site XiaoHongShu or Rednote with starting the trend, as seen in July 24th, 2025, screenshot posted by X^[2] user @__CRRN__ that read, "hopping on chinese. green apple trend or something." The post contained a screenshot from the Rednote app showing artworks with the title, "The air is like a green apple."

Spread

On July 24th, 2025, X^[3] user @2zhnri4 posted a drawing joining the apple trend with a tribute to "Namseok," which is the BTS fan pairing of K-Pop idols J-hope and RM. The post gathered over 2,000 likes in a week.

On July 25th, TikToker^[4] @dikanka.exe posted a TikTok participating in the apple trend with the characters Naruto and Sasuke from the anime Naruto. The post gathered over 100,000 views and 30,000 likes in five days.

On July 26th, 2025, Twitter / X^[5] user @NonsenseEnvy posted artwork participating in the apple trend, drawing the open frame from the Bad Apple!! meme and gathering over 180,000 likes in five days.

On July 29th, TikToker^[6] @breadliing posted a TikTok slideshow showing how they carved an outline from the anime and manga The Summer Hikaru Died or Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu into an actual apple, gathering over 1.4 million plays and 400,000 likes in a day. X^[7] user @yawnshiki reposted the slideshow on July 30th, gathering over 1 million views and 100,000 likes in a day.
