About

A Mimir is a Spanish babytalk mispronunciation of the phrase "A Dormir" (eng. "To sleep") that grew popular in the social media sites like Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr after the Japanese artist ᴰʳ.ᴍᴏʀɪᴄᴋʏ responded to a fan using the phrase.

Origin

The phrase "A Mimir" has been a popular way to refer to characters being tucked in beds or sleeping in Spanish speaking communities;^[1][2] however, its spread in online culture was meager until October 2019^[3]. Although the first iteration of this phrase included in a meme is unknown, the earliest example can be tracked down to image macros of a smiling dog tucked in a bed (shown below, left). On October 19th, 2019, Youtube user Pablo Valencia^[4] uploaded a video using the image with the caption "A mimir" and mashup between the songs "Usted" by Los Tres Diamantes and "Juicy" by Notorious B.I.G. (shown below, right). On October 23rd, the Facebook page Tori_Rivera^[5] posted the same image macro. On November 17th, Picsart user Edy Cruz,^[6] shared a sticker of the image with the caption "Hora de mimir" (eng. "Time to sleep"), which could suggest its subsequent spread through messaging apps.

Spread

On May 27th, 2020, YouTube user SAMU CA^[7] reuploaded a video with the watermark "Raschid Gutierrez" where a man face-plants after performing a front flip, accompanied by the caption "a mimir" and lullaby music (shown below, left). Over the following months, similar fail video remixes were uploaded to YouTube.^[8][9] On July 23rd, user iutub vs Feisbuk^[10] uploaded a compilation of clips, reaching 128k views (shown below, right), and on August 1st, YouTuber músicos Cínicos 鯉^[11] uploaded another one which reached 736k views, as of September 2020.

Two mimir

While the phrase "A mimir" was gaining popurality in Spanish-speaking meme communities, it didn't have a noticeable spread in the English and Japanese communities until June 6th, 2020, when the twitter artist ᴰʳ.ᴍᴏʀɪᴄᴋʏ^[12] shared a drawing of a little black kitten tucked on a bed (shown below, left). An hour later the user "Brujita Verde"^[13] responded to the drawing with the phrase, prompting the artist to ask what it meant and using the phrase after it was explained to her (conversation showed below, center and right).
Space

A few days later on June 15th, 2020, the artist shared a second drawing of a little bear and a white kitten tucked on a bed (shown below, left),^[14] alongside the phrase "Two Mimir" (shown below, right),^[15] mistakenly thinking that the original phrase meant a tiny creature called Mimir.

The next day, June 16th, 2020, screenshots of the conversation got reposted by the user jeonclouds^[16] getting 241,200 likes and 69,600 retweets. Alongside this, the term started to spread on different social media sites, where users started to refer to characters sleeping on beds as "A Mimir" or "Two Mimirs." For example, the user hobicitos^[17] shared a drawing of the BTS members Jin and Jungkook sleeping on a bed (shown, below left), getting 10,200 likes and 1,900 retweets. On June 20th, 2020, the artist lichenFriend^[18] uploaded an image of the Moomintroll from the series The Moomins tucked in a bed (shown below, center), gaining over 52,600 likes and 13,900 retweets. On June 29th, 2020, a video of two kittens sleeping on their back was reposted with the phrase "A Mimir" by the user petitebrunette,^[19] getting 157,000 likes and 43,700 retweets (Shown below, right).

Search Interest

Queries for "a mimir" began to escalate since October 2019. With the birth of "two mimir", search interest for both terms "a mimir" and "two mimir" peaked on late June 2020.
