Atan Menjadi Setan (Eng. Atan Became Satan) refers to a catchphrase from a video of a young Malaysian boy being struck by a motorcyclist while doing a video blog (vlog). In the video, the boy crosses the road without looking to the left or right. The video became popular among Indonesian speakers who used it as material for various remixes and edits.

Origin

On August 11th, 2014, YouTube [1] user kaki runner uploaded a video titled "Apabila atan menjadi setann" (Eng. If Atan became satan). In the video, a boy holds his selfie stick while vlogging with friends, and at the end of the video is struck by a motorcyclist while crossing the road. The video received more than 1.5 million views in seven years (shown below).

On December 3rd, 2015, YouTube user NauziVFX[2] uploaded the earliest known remix of the video, using various effects. The video received more than 530,000 views in six years (shown below).

Over the years, the video has been used as material for various memes. For example, starting in 2018, Facebook user Unkl Mitball periodically uploaded various memes involving the video, including a video about the opening of the Uma Musume Pretty Derby anime[3] (shown below, left), the Mio Honda Fried Chicken Video meme[4] (shown below, center), and Xue Hua Piao Piao meme[5] (shown below, right). The derby video received 326 reactions and 603 shares, the fried chicken video 2,097 reactions and 5,162 shares, and the Sue Hua Piao Piao video 689 reactions and 841 shares, respectively.

The video also gained popularity on YouTube. On April 7th, 2020, YouTube user Mizan Pilus[6] uploaded a video combining the boy's motorcycle mishap with the Coffin Dance meme. The video received 39,000 views in one year (shown below, left). On February 19th, 2021, YouTube[7] user Ya Begitulah uploaded another video, which showed the motorcyclist disappearing right before the moment of impact, saving the boy. It received more than 2,6 million views (shown below, right).
