Baby Kittens Without Mommies is a TikTok audio and series of memes based on a clip from a 2019 Annoying Orange video in which Grapefruit cries after being shown a sad kitten adoption commercial that begins with the jingle, "Baby kittens without mommies." In March 2026, the clip was uploaded to TikTok and began inspiring memes over the following weeks, including recreations and animations. One of the most popular meme formats related to the audio displays Grapefruit's dialogue as a series of DMs or text messages from a popular character who might act like Grapefruit in the scene.

Origin

On July 1st, 2019, YouTuber^[1] Annoying Orange uploaded a video titled, "Try Not to Cry Challenge #2." In the video, Little Apple and Grapefruit compete in a "try not to cry" challenge, where they try to make each other cry. Little Apple shows Grapefruit the same sad commercial three times, making him cry each time. The commercial shows kittens as a voice sings, "Baby kittens, without mommies." The video gained over 4.9 million views in seven years.

On March 4th, 2026, TikToker^[2] @cottoncandyfun1 posted the end of the Annoying Orange video, where Grapefruit is convinced to call and adopt the kittens after seeing the commercial for a third time, garnering over 1.5 million views in a month.

On March 29th, 2026, TikToker^[3] @xmedievaltupx posted a meme that displays the audio as a text conversation, garnering over one million views in a month.

This became a common trend with the audio going forward, where a different character is displayed texting Grapefruit's dialogue from the video.
