About

Hey Apple! What? "Amazing Grace," also known as Annoying Orange "Amazing Grace," refers to an edited scene from The Annoying Orange in which The Annoying Orange says "Hey Apple!" to which Apple says "What?" and then The Annoying Orange is shown with a gaping mouth and an uncanny face while an old-timey rendition of the song "Amazing Grace" plays. The creepy and scary video, reminiscent of Analog Horror, was originally posted to YouTube in June 2023, later spreading to TikTok in August 2023 where a photo slideshow and reanimation trend emerged.

Origin

On June 21st, 2023, YouTuber[1] Frog3mAn posted a video that re-edited a scene from The Annoying Orange YouTube series in which The Annoying Orange said, "Hey Apple!" to which Apple responded "What?" and then, the camera cut back to The Annoying Orange with a different face and a gaping mouth, playing the first-ever recording of the song "Amazing Grace" sung by the Original Sacred Harp Choir in 1922.[2] The video gained roughly 32,600 views and 1,500 likes in two months (shown below). It is currently the first-known upload of the video.

The video was likely based on a precursor video, posted by YouTuber[3] Castoreo on May 5th, 2023, which used the rendition of "Amazing Grace" with creepy Family Guy visuals, receiving roughly 28,400 views in three months (shown below).

Spread

On July 5th, 2023, TikToker[4] @crustaceomancer reposted the Annoying Orange "Amazing Grace" video, gaining roughly 320,200 plays and 18,100 likes in one month. On July 28th, 2023, YouTuber[5] KGiordi uploaded an extended version of the original called "heỳ̷̳ a̷p̵̯͗p̸̮̿l̷̫͑̈́̊ė̵̳̮̟̱͊͗̀," gaining roughly 7,300 views in one month (shown below).

On August 10th, 2023, TikToker[6] @metal_fan999 posted a low-quality version of the video, gaining roughly 2.7 million plays and 414,600 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). Due to the virality, many creators on the app started using @metal_fan999's sound,[7] starting a photo slideshow trend. For instance, the first-known usage of the sound was a slideshow posted by TikToker[8] @mr_real_man on August 18th, gaining roughly 244,000 plays and 113,700 likes in six days.

Video remixes of the scene also surfaced, such as a reanimation posted by TikToker[9] @burvye on August 20th, 2023, which gained roughly 244,600 plays and 7,300 likes in four days (shown below, right).

@metal_fan999 Hey apple.. #annoyingorange #sep11th2001 #bugsundermyskin ♬ original sound – 🙂

@burvye Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed The Lord hath promised good to me, His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures. When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we first begun. #fyp #horror #heyapple #amazinggrace ♬ original sound – Burvy

Over the course of two weeks, @metal_fan999's sound[7] amassed over 9,900 uses. Other sounds[10] on the app also accumulated usage.
