Baby My Phone is a 2020 song by virtual artist Yameii Online. In March 2021, the song spawned a dress-up and makeup trend on TikTok.

Origin

On December 18th, 2020, virtual artist Yameii Online (aka Yameii) uploaded^[1] an animated music video for her single "BABY MY PHONE." The video (shown below) received over 2.4 million views on YouTube in three months. On January 15th, Yameii Online uploaded the song to Soundcloud.^[2]

On February 14th, 2021, TikTok^[3] user vlonezzzzz posted the earliest found TikTok that used the audio, a Very Scary Movie edit (shown below, left). The TikTok received over 738,000 views and 64,800 likes in one month. On February 15th, TikTok^[4] user ghwulic made another upload of the song by using it in their TikTok, with the video accumulating over 890,000 views and 57,100 likes in one month (shown below, right).

Prior to March 5th, several viral TikToks^[5][6][7] that used the song were posted outside any pronounced trend.

On March 5th, TikTok^[8] user pluto.nash posted a video in which they pretended to pass the phone to themselves, obscuring the camera. The video then cut to pluto.nash, dressed-up and with makeup on, taking the "phone." The video (shown below, left) received over 195,000 views and 63,500 likes in three weeks and is the earliest found example of this trend. On March 13th, TikTok^[9] user christinavchao posted the earliest found TikTok^[10] that followed the format, with the video gaining over 388,000 views and 106,200 likes (shown below, right). In the video, christinavchao added lines of dialogue, partly homophonous with the lyrics.

In the following weeks, the format received viral spread on TikTok, with multiple videos following the format being posted.
