"Before I Knew It" is a 2019 song by Mason Ramsey, also known as the Walmart Yodel Boy, for a viral 2018 video where Ramsey yodels "Lovesick Blues" in the middle of Walmart. The song went viral on TikTok in January 2022 and inspired a dance trend as TikTokers discovered it for the first time and praised Ramsey's unexpected musical talent.

Origin

On July 26th, 2019, Mason Ramsey released the song "Before I Knew It" from his album "Twang," released the same year. The official YouTube^[1] upload (shown below) gained over 482,000 views in three years.

Spread

The song experienced a surge in popularity in January 2022 on TikTok. On January 13th, TikToker^[2] @uncle.ag posted a selfied video filming her own shocked face over the song, captioned, "AYO THAT YODEL KID WAS ONTO SOMETHING," gaining over 2.7 million views in 11 days. On January 16th, TikToker @elznertm posted a similar video doubting that the "yodel kid" could make a good song, then dancing along to it, gaining over 3.5 million views in 10 days (shown below).

On the same day, TikToker @tpose_queen posted a similar video dancing to the song, gaining over 3.7 million views in 10 days (shown below, left). On January 21st, Mason Ramsey duetted the video, doing the dance along with him, gaining over 18.6 million views in three days (shown below, right).

On January 22nd, TikToker @goobmac posted a video dancing to the song, gaining over 12.7 million views in two days (shown below).

Ramsey posted numerous viral videos using the sound following its viral success, many showing him working his job at Subway (examples shown below, left and right).
