On January 28th, 2021, CNN broadcast a story titled "Behind the Reddit-Driven Stock Market Frenzy" on television, in which they give more context on the Gamestop stock surge. At one point in the broadcast, /r/WallStreetBets is shown on the screen, along with a meme[1] referencing the stock surge, next to CNN broadcaster Chris Cuomo. On that day, @tortieyt tweeted,[2] "LMAO" and a screenshot from the newscast, garnering over 174,000 likes and 21,700 retweets in 4 days (shown below). This screenshot spread across social media through reposts over the next few days.[7][8]

On January 29th, 2021, @_herck commented,[4] "new exploitable just dropped" under @tortieyt's post along with a blank template of the meme offering a white space in place of the television, garnering over 3,900 likes and 230 retweets in 3 days. This inspired users to create their own versions of the meme and post them under @_herck's comment over the course of the next day (examples shown below, left and right).[5][6]
On January 29th, @Ypmuj_ commented[10] under @tortieyt's post with a new variation of the meme referencing Doom and featuring Doge, garnering over 3,600 likes in 3 days (shown below, left). On January 30th, u/17Konbro posted an anime-themed version of the meme to /r/goodanimemes,[9] garnering over 3,500 upvotes in 2 days (shown below, right).
On January 30th, u/Michaelrheinsc posted a template of the meme to /r/MemeEconomy,[3] garnering over 4,000 upvotes in 2 days.
