Stock Market BF and Astrology GF is an image macro series based on stereotypes about men and women amid the /r/WallStreetBets GameStop Short Squeeze. These memes usually feature photographs and screenshots from pop culture of disheveled men and women with colored hair.
Origin
In January 2021, a surge in GameStop's stock price influenced by a campaign on the market-focused subreddit led to increased interest in the stock market among amateur traders.
On January 21st, 2021, Twitter [1] user @digitalworm tweeted, "stock market son or astrology daughter." The post received more than 104,000 likes and 14,000 retweets in less than two weeks (shown below, left). Days later, on January 23rd, Twitter[2] user @applekitty01 retweeted @digitalworm's post and wrote, "or: stock market bf and astrology gf" (shown below, right).
The following week, on January 27th, Twitter[3] user @angeapangea tweeted a photo of a woman yelling at a man through a bullhorn. They captioned the image, "my bf explaining to me the stock market while i explain to him the full moon in leo." The post received more than 220,000 likes and 30,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, left).
That day, Twitter[4] user @pepiscoala posted a photo of Elon Musk and Grimes with the caption "stock market bf and astrology gf." The post received more than 600 likes in less than in one week (shown below, right).
Spread
The following day, on January 28th, 2021, people continued to meme variations of the format. That day, Twitter[5] user @twatson_13 tweeted a photo from the film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World with the caption. The post received more than 279,000 likes and 34,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, left).
The continued coverage the /r/WallStreetBets story, kept the meme relevant as Twitter users shared variations of the couple (examples below, center and right).
