About
Beta Regigigas refers to an unused sprite for the legendary Pokémon Regigigas discovered in the 2020 Nintendo Source Code Gigaleak. The sprite looks similar to the released version, though the beta sprite lacks the grass on the shoulders and feet of the released version and it is more hunched over. Online, fans made jokes about the beta Regigigas by emphasizing how it looked like it was strutting.
Origin
On July 24th, 2020, an anonymous 4chan user leaked a significant amount of data from Nintendo, including unused sprites from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.[1] Included in these leaks was an unused beta sprite for Regigigas, a legendary Pokémon (shown below).
Spread
Upon the discovery of the unused sprite, fans began making photoshops featuring the sprite, emphasizing beta Regigigas' posture. Internet users inserted the sprite into other memes; for example, Twitter user @wafflebandito[2] photoshopped the sprite into John Lennon The Absolute Madman, gaining over 200 retweets and 800 likes (shown below, left). KnowYourMeme user sims2822[3] also used a Beatles reference, photoshopping beta Regigigas into the cover for Abbey Road, along with several other beta sprites (shown below, right).
Other examples include a post by iFunny[4] user Pokehog, who photoshopped beta Regigigas into Oh, You're Approaching Me?, gaining 24 likes (shown below, left). Twitter user @UltimaShadowX[5] posted a Virgin vs. Chad edit with the image, comparing Regigigas to Beta Garchomp, gaining over 580 retweets and 2,600 likes (shown below, right).
