About

Unique refers to a series of memes about Beyonce's song "Alien Superstar" from her 2022 album Renaissance, in which she compares herself to extraterrestrial or otherworldly beings to express the essence of how "unique" the singer is. Fans of the singer are posting funny edit videos and image memes with Beyonce's voice saying "unique."

Origin

On July 29th, 2022, the American singer Beyoncé released her seventh studio album Renaissance[1]. One of the new 16 songs in the album, "Alien Superstar"[2], received high praise from fans. They soon started using a turning point in the music when Beyoncé said the word "unique" to make funny montages of how they reacted while listening to the song (see below).

This tweet montage by @heyjaeee[3], from August 3rd, 2022 of a Mean Girls scene shows the characters fixated on the "unique" part of the song "Alien Superstar." The post earned 24,000 likes and 3,400 retweets in less than two months.

Spread

Celebrities including Keke Palmer[4] and Kerry Washington[5] talked about the impact the song had on them. The meme gained popularity around the same time in August 2022. Fans, especially on Twitter, used snippets of the music in random videos, like this tweet posted to Twitter[7] by @joaopcorisco on August 2nd, 2022, explaining how sometimes he listens to Beyoncé saying "unique" out of nowhere. The tweet (seen below) had 12,600 likes and 2,400 retweets in two months.

The meme also got popular on TikTok, with LGBTQ+ Ballroom[6] enthusiasts using the music for funny dips (iconic drop done by vogue dancers, also known as a deathdrop or shawam in pop culture) transitions videos. The post below, uploaded to TikTok[8] @batheuzs on August 14th, 2022, shows a man hitting his head and transitioning to a ballroom dip video when Beyoncé says "unique." The video has 374,000 views and 84,000 likes in two months.
