Bob Ross Challenge is a vlogging YouTube challenge in which participants follow a Bob Ross painting tutorial from his 1983-1994 PBS show The Joy of Painting. The videos became popular in the YouTube community in 2016 and then became a web series promoted by Mashable in 2018 in which comedians and celebrities perform the challenge for charity.

Origin

On July 25th, 2013, Barstool Sports uploaded the first known Bob Ross Challenge (shown below). The video garnered over 104,400 views in seven years.

Spread

On September 13th, 2018, Jenna Marbles uploaded "Following A Bob Ross Painting Tutorial" which garnered over 8.4 million views and 495,000 likes in two years (shown below, left). On October 15th, Mashable uploaded their first video in their Bob Ross Challenge web series produced and created by Micah Sherman and Mark Stetson to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.[1][2] The first episode featured comedian Aparma Nancheria and garnered 4,000 views in a year (shown below, right).
