"Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored", or "break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored", is a song by American recording artist Ariana Grande from her 2019 album Thank U, Next. Online, people have used the song title to caption images of pop culture examples of infidelity.

Origin

The song was announced along with several other song titles from the Thank U, Next album on January 22nd, 2019 on Grande's Instagram. ^[1][2] The following day, she posted a snippet of the song on Instagram,^[3] receiving more than 924,000 views and 344,000 likes in less than one month (shown below).

Several weeks later, on February 7th, Ariana Grande released a music video for the song "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" on YouTube. The post received more than 65 million views in about one week (shown below).

On February 8th, people began meme-ing both the video and creating image macros featuring the song title. For example, Twitter ^[4] user @nolnfilm tweeted the title with a screenshot from the film Call Me By Your Name. The post received more than 12,000 retweets and 35,000 likes in one week (shown below, left).

Others used the title as phrasal template, replacing "I'm bored" with other humorous expressions, such as specifics from the American reality series The Jersey Shore, as posted by Twitter^[5] user @Gregggyboy. The post by @Gregggyboy received more than 19,000 retweets and 73,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).

On February 11th, Twitter^[9] user @TheRealKatPat tweeted, "break up with your girlfriend she’s cheating on you every Thursday in the projection room above the auditorium with Shane Oman." The post received more than 56,000 retweets and 272,000 likes in four days (shown below).
