About
Can I Have A Grape? or the Grape Spitting Challenge refers to a trend on TikTok where one person casually asks another for a grape and they oblige by spitting the grape into their mouth. The trend began in mid-August 2021 and spread significantly in late September. Another variation on the trend has users spit water into each other's mouths and attempt to catch the stream.
Origin
On August 14th, 2021, TikToker[1] @kaseytatis posted a skit where he's eating grapes and laying in bed with a friend. The friend turns to him and says, "Yo bro, can I have a grape?" and he responds "yeah," then plucks a grape from the bunch with his teeth and spits it into his friend's mouth from a distance. The friend catches it and eats it and the two break into laughter (shown below). The video gained over 2.4 million views in a month.

Spread
The trend spread over the course of late August 2021 as TikTokers did their best recreations of the skit. For example, on August 22nd, TikTokers[2][3] @allisonr14 and @ashecampbell made versions of the video spitting grapes into people's mouths, gaining over 775,000 views and 14 million views respectively in a month (shown below, left and right).

The trend continued to inspire new videos throughout September. On September 8th, TikTok[4] couple @itsrosieandharry posted a video doing the challenge and breaking down laughing after, gaining over 865,000 views in two weeks (shown below).

A variation on the trend involves one person drinking water then spitting it into another's mouth after they ask, "Can I have a drink of water?" The two trends are often combined. For example, on September 18th, TikToker[5] @madi posted a video where one of her friends spits a grape into her mouth, followed by her spitting water into that friend's mouth, gaining over 5.7 million views in three days (shown below).
