Part of a series on JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. [View Related Entries]

About

Crunchyroll Stand Names refer to changes to the character names in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime series in translations offered by the streaming company Crunchyroll, done in order to avoid copyright issues. Starting with the launch of Golden Wind part of the anime series, the Crunchyroll translations have been parodied in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure community due to extensive, notable changes introduced in that part.

Origin

In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga and anime series, multiple minor and major characters borrow their names from popular Western musicians, bands, musical albums and compositions, which creates a potential risk for copyright issues for distributors of the manga and anime series outside of Japan.

On December 22nd, 2012, episode 12 "The Pillar Man" of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime series premiered in Japan.[1] On April 11th, 2014, the episode started streaming on Crunchyroll anime streaming platform.[2] In the subtitles offered by Crunchyroll, the name of character Santana was changed to Santviento, presumably in order to avoid copyright issues.

'll name him after the Mexican sirocco! Santviento!

Spread

In Crunchyroll translations of the following episodes of the anime series, names of multiple characters, primarily stands, were changed (i.e. Steely Dan to Dan of Steel, Vanilla Ice to Cool Ice, Red Hot Chili Pepper to Chili Pepper, Sex Pistols to Six Bullets).[3] Besides Crunchyroll, similar approach was adopted in the official translation of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle fighting game, released on April 29th, 2014, as well as in several other translations of various JoJo's Bizarre Adventure installments.[4]

In part five Golden Wind of the anime series, launched in October 2018, multiple names of the stands belonging to major characters were changed, prompting a mixed reaction from the fan community. For example, on October 12th, 2018, Redditor nachoolo made a post ridiculing the choice of copyright-friendly name for the stand Sticky Fingers, translated as Zipper Man (shown below, left).[5]

Zipper Man!!
WHAT'S WRONG PUCCI? WHY DO YOU WANT TO RESET THE WORLD? NOME DEL STAND NEMICO NoTORlUS CHASE FAVORE- NON CE LA FACCIO PIU.. PRIMA DI MORILE DESIDEZEREI MANGIARE PER CULTIMA 2A DELLA MIA
Aerosmith Lil Bomber

In the following months, posts poking fun at translations, as well as at viewers who adressed characters by their copyright-friendly names, gained popularity in /r/ShitpostCrusaders subreddit. Additionally, a misspeling of the word "who" as "wh7o" in episode 22 "The 'G' in Guts" of the Golden Wind series, premiered on March 15th, 2019, prompted additional memes ridiculing the Crunchyroll translations.

This seems to a one of those overly negatives memes, for no real reason. Crunchy can't use the original names without have to pay a ton of money for licensing rights. It's not practical.
The changes also give chuckle worthy names such, Boy Man Man, Worse Compony, Filthy Acts At A Reasonable Price and Flaccid Pancake.
Or in some cases just as good or better names such, Shining Diamond, Cool Ice or Emperor Crimson.
