About

Dad Bod Vin Diesel refers to an image macro series of American actor Vin Diesel standing shirtless on a balcony with a cigarette in his hand. The image went viral due to the change in appearance from Diesel's toned body in various action films and his larger appearance in the photograph.

Origin

On October 6th, 2015, US magazine[1] published a photograph of Diesel in Miami (shown below). They wrote, "Holy moly, who is that?! Vin Diesel looked surprisingly different while sans shirt on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The usually super buff Fast & Furious star seems to have opted out of his usual workout routine and showcased a softer-looking body while lounging in Miami."

Spread

The following day, Taringa.net[2] published a series of memes based on the photograph. These include image macro memes and image edits (examples below, left and center).

On October 8th, a Redditor [3] who has since deleted their account posted one of the photographs with the caption "Now I can finally say me and Vin Diesel have the same body." The post received more than 4,900 points (90% upvoted) and 600 comments in less than five years (shown below, right).

Days later, Diesel responded to the photographs. He wrote on Instagram, [4] "It is amazing the response from the journalists who I have been talking to for the last two days in New York. Today one wanted to see the dad bod. Haha I am wondering if I should show the picture… Body-shaming is always wrong! What do you think?" The post received more than 320,000 likes in less than five years.

The meme continued over the next few years. For example, on April 19th, 2020, Instagram [5] user @a.memeingless.life shared the image with the caption "Watching my Grubhub driver dropoff my $30 meal from a fast food restaurant that is literally 2 blocks away." The post received more than 5,900 likes in less than two days.
