Dairy Queen Lips Advertisements refers to a series of television advertisements released by Dairy Queen between 2006 and 2011 featuring the "Dairy Queen Lips" mascot, a floating set of lips that morphs into the Dairy Queen logo. The advertisements became the subject of parody remixes in late 2020 throughout early 2021.

Origin

In 2006, Dairy Queen started airing a series of television advertisements featuring a large, floating pair of CGI lips, known as the "Dairy Queen Lips," that would morph into the Dairy Queen logo at the end of each commercial. Dairy Queen retired the mascot in 2011.

On July 3rd, 2016, Toonsville Street uploaded a compilation video showing a number of Dairy Queen Lips commercials to YouTube[1] garnering over 446,000 views in roughly 4 years (shown below).

The DQ Lips have been the subject of occasional memes since at least 2010. For example, on August 2nd, 2010, 321crap uploaded a video edit of a Dairy Queen Lips commercial mixed with the Shoop Da Whoop and It's Over 9,000 meme to YouTube,[2] garnering over 24,000 views in 10 years (shown below).

Dairy Queen Lips ad memes saw increased interest in late 2020 throughout early 2021 after a series of clips from Dairy Queen Lips ads, particularly one featuring the lips eating a girl scout, started spreading around YouTube.

So, Phil, Is It?

During the Dairy Queen Lips ad era, Dairy Queen released a TV commercial featuring the DQ Lips interacting with an alien named "Phil" who explodes into green goo after screeching (shown below).[8]

On September 12th, 2020, Scott uploaded an edit of the ad, titled, "So Phil, is it?" to YouTube[9] where Phil explodes immediately, garnering over 34,000 views in 5 months (shown below). As the video spread in conjunction with the "Wanna Buy a Box of Thin Mints" meme, more edits began to pop up, gaining significant views.

On November 7th, shammy the loser uploaded an edit of the commercial to YouTube[10] titled, "so phil, is it? but phil won't stop drinking" garnering over 619,000 views in 3 months (shown below, left). On November 28th, cringenics uploaded an edit titled, "So, Phil, Is it? but phil never drinks" to YouTube,[11] garnering over 324,000 views in a comparable span of time (shown below, right).

Wanna Buy a Box of Thin Mints?

On September 14th, 2020, Smiliespace uploaded a one-second-long video titled, "wanna buy a box of thin mints" to YouTube.[3] In the video, the DQ Lips eat a girl scout after she asks if they want to buy a box of Thin Mints (shown below, left). This is taken from a fictional "outtake" produced for the original DQ Thin Mints commercial, which can be seen at 1:18 in Toonsville Street's montage (shown below, right). Smiliespace's video gained over 18,000 views in 5 months. The video was re-uploaded to YouTube by Shoruken64 on October 3rd, garnering over 1.3 million views in 4 months.

As the video grew in popularity, new edits of the Thin Mints commercial began popping up on YouTube, some gaining significant attention. Many of these use the outtake of the DQ Lips eating the girl scout. On September 27th, Kukonic uploaded an edit of the commercial to YouTube[4] using the song Sicko Mode at the end, garnering over 573,000 views in 5 months (shown below, left).

On November 30th, thiswere2g uploaded an edit of the ad to YouTube,[5] garnering over 826,000 views in 3 months (shown below, right).

The meme continued into 2021, seeing a significant increase in quantity on YouTube. On February 6th, 2021, Arcade Assassin uploaded a version of the meme with a "bad ending"[6] garnering over 197,000 views in 2 days (shown below, left). On February 7th, RNemo uploaded a "saddest ending" version of the meme to YouTube,[7] garnering over 360,000 views in a day (shown below, right).
