About

Wanna Buy A Box Of Thin Mints? refers to a soundbite used in memes taken from a Dairy Queen Lips Advertisement which originally aired in 2006 on American TV. The audio was used in memes on YouTube, predominantly in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the audio had a resurgence in usage on TikTok, associated with the song "Rocking A Cardigan in Atlanta" by Lil Shordie Scott which lead with the lyric, "I wanna take a pic with Cardi B inside my cardigan."

Origin

In 2006, Dairy Queen started airing a series of television advertisements featuring a large, floating pair of CGI lips, known as the "Dairy Queen Lips," that would morph into the Dairy Queen logo at the end of each commercial. Dairy Queen retired the mascot in 2011.

On July 3rd, 2016, the YouTube channel Toonsville Street uploaded a compilation video showing a number of Dairy Queen Lips commercials,[1] earning roughly 1.4 million views in six years (shown below). At the 0:53-minute mark, one of the commercials begins that features a little girl asking the Dairy Queen Lips if it wants to buy a box of thin mints. The Lips answers, "Sure, I'll take two boxes," and then the little girl responds, "How 'bout 2 million?" The Lips answers, "No, 1 million," essentially falling victim to the girl's sales tactics in a humorous fashion.

Spread

On September 14th, 2020, the YouTube[2] channel Smiliespace uploaded a one-second-long video titled, "wanna buy a box of thin mints." In the video, the DQ Lips eat the girl scout after she asks if they want to buy a box of Thin Mints and over the course of two years, the video received roughly 22,700 views (shown below, left). As the aforementioned video gained views, new edits of the Thin Mints commercial started appearing. For instance, on September 27th, 2020, YouTuber[3] Kukonic posted a video using the song Sicko Mode and gained roughly 978,300 views in two years (shown below, right).

More edits were uploaded to YouTube going into 2021, like on February 11th, 2021, YouTuber[4] Norme posted a compilation of "Wanna Buy A Box Of Thin Mints?" edits that received roughly 2.8 million views in 16 months (shown below).
