Despite Being Only 13% of the Population, also known as the Despite Making up 13 Percent of The Population Copypasta, is a copypasta used to satirize those who recite racial crime statistics online, often in the context of Ben Shapiro Destroys memes.

Origin

The exact origin of the original copypasta is unknown, but messages containing variations of the phrase "despite being only X percentage of the population" have been widely circulated within white supremacist online communities. On April 27th, 2015, a post on the community /r/ShitRedditSays^[2] was submitted, which identified a copypasta containing a variation of the statistic as coming from the Neo-Nazi and white supremacist site Stormfront. The most popular variation is as follows, minor edits excluded:

Despite making up only 13% of the population, blacks make up 52% of crimes.

Spread

On September 28, 2018, Redditor /u/TheReturnOfRuin submitted a thread to /r/ChapoTrapHouse titled "Hey vsauce, Michael here!"^[4]. In their thread, they included "Despite making up 13% of the population," copypasta in their text post. The post gained 19 upvotes and 6 comments, being 82% upvoted.

On December 10th, 2018, iFunny^[1] user Husbean uploaded an image containing the caption "despite only making up 13 percent of the population, iFunny makes 50 percent of all memes" (shown below).

On February 8th, 2019, iFunny user CpyClutchTM submitted an image macro using the Nobody: format to set up a joke about white people uttering racial crime statistics using photos of Theresa May Dancing (shown below, left). On February 10th, Redditor drwankbanana uploaded an Elder Scrolls screenshot titled "Why do Khajiit commit 90% of all violent crime in Skyrim despite only making up 13% of its population?" (shown below, right). Within two months, the post gained over 1,400 points (97% upvoted).
