About
Devious Reptilian Backshots refers to a tweening animation and GIF of Spider-Man getting pulled into a sewer from behind by the Lizard, also known as Dr. Curt Connors. The animation was posted to Instagram in January 2023 and became the subject of memes and reactions in March after going viral on TikTok and Twitter when a user described the animation as Spider-Man taking "devious reptilian backshots" from the Lizard, meaning the Lizard is having sex with Spider-Man from behind.
Origin
On November 25th, 2022, Instagram[8] user and artist wens.1998 posted a piece of static artwork showing Spider-Man getting pulled into the sewer by the Lizard, garnering over 42,000 likes in five months (shown below, left). An animated version of it was also posted to his Twitter, @1998wens, but deleted. On January 3rd, Twitter[12] user @cerealbans retweeted the animation, writing, "Ah hell nah he giving Spider-Man some FILTHY BACKSHOTS." On January 4th, 2023, Instagram[1] user pixel.shadow, who created the looping animation of the image, posted it, garnering over 1,700 likes in three months (shown below).
On January 5th, Instagram[13] user wokebans posted the retweet by cerealbans, garnering over 379,000 likes in four months.
On March 8th, TikToker[2] @lebdoee posted the animation, captioning it, "They got Spider-Man getting some devious reptilian backshots," garnering over 648,000 views in a month (shown below).

On March 9th, 2023, Twitter[3] user @Codycar3877293 posted the same video, writing, "They got spiderman getting some Devious reptilian backshots," garnering over 95,800 likes in a month. The post inspired memes and reactions to the animation. For example, on March 9th, Twitter[4] user @saniSt2D retweeted it, writing, "The porn ad in the bottom right corner of kisscartoon," garnering over 40,000 likes in a month. On March 15th, Twitter[5] user @FortniteFactsfr posted an edit of the animation surrounded by the caption "try not to cum challenge," garnering over 2,600 likes in a month (shown below, left).
On March 21st, Twitter[6] user @1inkygirl quote-retweeted a post sharing three Spider-Man movie posters showing the backs of the stars, writing, "Spider-Man Backshots > Anything Else." The quote-retweeter replied with a speech bubbling image of the Lizard, referencing the meme, garnering over 60,000 likes in a month (shown below, right).
On April 5th, the original artist, @1998Wens on Twitter,[9] made a post about a company selling his artwork on a shirt without permission, garnering over 1,600 likes in three weeks. He made two more posts to Twitter[10][11] that day discussing the artwork's meme life, writing, "I am proud to have made this art. The way art was later animated by third parties is that it changed people’s perception of this art. But art alone is just the spidey fleeing from the lizard while captured," and, "It’s okay that it became a meme, I don’t care about that anymore. I’m glad people had fun. But now this art lives only in my heart. And it doesn’t matter what they do with her anymore. I don’t care if they’re selling it. I just expressed my art, and I’m at peace with it" (shown below).
On April 26th, Twitter[7] user @swagamicchi quote-retweeted an animation in a similar tweening, writing, "that spiderman reptilian backshots gif and the bowser fart gif has done irreparable damage to the reception of these lil animations," garnering over 4,400 likes in a day (shown below, right).
